IT Jobs

Hi there

Can anyone advise, my husband and daughter and i are relocating to malta in october as i have been offered a job but we are looking for IT based jobs full time for husband, he has contacted various agencies but if anyone has any contacts or advise on current job postings please let us know,

Thank you in advance
Laura

Hi Laura,

Welcome to the forum, I am also in IT (30 years) and have 'tested' the waters by applying for a few positions. The advice given off many here is that the best and possibly the quickest way is to walk the streets knocking on company doors and introducing yourself and leaving a CV.

There are a number of agencies, look at the sticky entitled 'job agencies'.

The IT industry is very broad, what area does your husband specialize in?

Kind regards

Ken

Hi Laura,

There is a good site for IT jobs, have a look HERE. You will need to register to be able to see the full details of the job vacancies.

Good luck!

I am looking into signing up for an IT course next month so I will be able to find a job easier, the problem is I'm not sure what it entails, I understand some of it is using word, spreadsheets etc is that all it is? Also as I know nothing about IT I'm worried that I will do a course which will not be reconised in Malta or that isn't the one I need Is the ECDL of any benefit or the cisco?As we are moving over in May it has to be a short course, please help I'm lost x

Hi Dianne,

the courses you quote are aimed at general and more advanced computer skills that would be neccessary for some office and commercial jobs.

What kind of work will you be looking for here in Malta?

As you say you know nothing about IT these courses should be fine and you should start with the basic level.

Whether or not it will help you find work in Malta is a different question but skills always help.

Please bear in mind that these courses have not much to do with the range of IT jobs that are available for highly qualified and experienced IT specialists.

Cheers
Ricky

Thanks Ricky,

I already have some computor skills, I graduated uni last year so I know my way round word to a point, not sure what I'll end up doing as I'm open to anything but people on here keep mentioning i gaming and IT so I thought doing a course would make me more employable but as I said I'm not 100% sure what sort of IT I would need for this. I have other ideas, I found out yesterday that I could go to uni in Malta to do either my masters or teacher training and get funding from here so when I come over next month I'm going to visit the uni to check that out but I've also thought of setting up a stall on the market, another thing I'm going to look into failing that a bar/waitressing job I'm really not too bothered about what I do as long as I'm in Malta lol and I don't need to earn much maybe £100 a week for food and fun,
Dianne

Hi Dianne,

igaming jobs are generally speaking either in the customer care section for the various countries involved and require one or more foreign languages possibly as a native speaker or else in the technical and financial back-up. These are jobs like fraud control,accounting, managing and designing websites including programming and so on.

IT jobs ask for these kind of skills and experience (just one example):

    Degree in IT or related professional qualifications;
    At least one year working experience in a software development environment;
    Good working knowledge of VB.NET, ASP.NET, XML and SQL Server Database;
    Preferably skills and experience in Microsoft Dynamics CRM;
    Good verbal and written communication skills;
    Previous banking experience (as a plus).

I'm not sure how far you will get with 120 €/week for food and fun! You won't have any other expenses ?

Setting up a market stall will require a permit which is not that easy to come by.

Applications for the university can be made online but the deadlines are coming up soon for the next study year.

We own 2 houses outright which will fetch in £850 a month so thats why we are just looking for something part time each, I think maybe the IT course may be a waste of time so thanks for that. As we are not coming until may/june next year i would be applying for the uni course for next year so it's too early yet. I'm a bit gutted about the stall though but I'll give it a try and see what happens or maybe open a shop instead. I have made a connection with a hotel manager on facebook and he said he would sort me out with a bar/waitress job either at the hotel he runs or at one of his friends who own bars/hotels but I want to keep my options open and not have all my eggs in one basket, it's a bit scary moving to another country, the furthest I've ever moved is 3 miles to the next town but I came to Malta and fell in love so gonna have to be brave and face the fear head on with as much info as I can get :)

Hi Dianne,

you are on the best way to doing the correct homework you need to do before making the move.

There is a lot of expertise on different issues available on the forum.

If you give us the best details you can it makes it easier to give you good advice. Coming with fixed income of around 1000 €/month is a good basis to live in Malta -))). That you can supplement with any kind of income but I do understand and would advise you to look for the best possible option -)))

Don't let the move scare you ! We are here to answer any question you might have . Usually somebody on the forum can give you advice or comment on any given issue.

From what you have told us I would say scrap the 'IT' course ... if Word,Powerpoint or Excel are neccessary for a job you can learn it fast -))) For a 'real' IT job you would need to learn for several years anyway.

Cheers

Thanks Ricky, you have been very helpful and I know people on here are lovely, I come on every day to find as much information as I can :) It's a big upheaval leaving family and friends behind but my heart is in Malta so in spite of that and a bit of fear of the unknown it won't stop me moving in fact I'm counting down the months thanks again :)

Hi Dianne,

we all try our best to give good advice.

Thanks for your praise. We appreciate comments , especially positive ones -)))

I (we) look forward to giving you any advice that we can.

Cheers
Ricky

Thanks Ricky, I'll no doubt have a few more questions over the next few months
