Ireland to face Australia in 2010

World Champions Australia has agreed to play both Ireland in the next 2 years in a one day international.

Following a collaborative approach by the Scotland and Ireland to the ECB and Cricket Australia, agreement has been reached for Australia to play a game in 2009 and a further one in 2010.

Australia will visit Scotland on the 28th of August 2009 between the conclusion of the Ashes test series and the start of their ODI series with England.

They will then play Ireland in June 2010 before they play England in an ODI series.  These will be the first official ODIs against Associates that Australia will have played outside of ICC Events.

Cricket Ireland and Cricket Scotland have worked closely together to achieve this outcome and are obviously delighted that both national sides will have an opportunity to play the visiting Australians.

Both matches are sure to be the highlight of the respective seasons for the teams and will further support the countries aspirations to compete frequently against the world's elite.

Commenting on the announcement, Warren Deutrom Cricket Ireland's Chief Executive added

'Attracting Full Member countries to play in Scotland and Ireland is one of the key objectives of our respective cricketing and commercial strategies, and for both of us to secure such a high-profile team as Australia in consecutive years is a great coup.

It is only by testing ourselves against the very best that we will understand how far we need to progress.

We are also indebted to ECB for their support to both Scotland and Ireland in helping to bring about this excellent agreement for Associate Cricket.'

Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland CEO, shared the sentiments of Mr Deutrom, stating ‘This is fantastic news for both Ireland and Scotland.

To attract the Australians to our countries is a major achievement for us both and we are very grateful to the ECB and CA for their support.

Although Scotland and Ireland are fierce competitors on the field, this is a great example of the two countries working together off the field to both our benefit.'

I recently purchased tickets to see the 17 June 2010 Australia vs Ireland ODI.  It'll be great seeing such an important game being played in the Republic.  It should be a great day out especially if the sunshines all day long.  Are any other Antipodean expats going? Or do ya reckon that I'll be the only joker there?

Nah mate you won't be the only joker there - I got me and the Missus tickets too.  We're really excited about it.  Should be tops.  Have you checked out Knockharley CC.  Senior players meet for training on a Thursday night.  Stockman you interested in Umpiring Juniors?  Dropus a line mate!

Aussie expats take heart the days are getting longer, we're startin to see more of the blue sky, and Summers just around the corner.  Best of all the Aussies cricket squad will be headin for Dublin Town!

CricketEurope announced this 24 September 2009 in relation to Ireland vs Australia 2010 ODI
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cricket Ireland today announced that Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin will stage the One Day International with Australia in 2010.

The fixture will be played on Thursday June 17th, and Clontarf President Roger McGreal was understandably delighted at being awarded the game.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our club to showcase Irish cricket, and I'm sure all our members will rise to the occasion. We have carried out major improvements to the ground over the past year and have increased capacity at the venue. It's sure to be a fantastic game, and I've no doubt that we'll be able to accommodate all those wanting to see Ireland take on Australia.”

The venue is no stranger to hosting high profile games, with West Indies playing Bangladesh during the 1999 World Cup. South Africa and the West Indies have also played Ireland at the picturesque venue in recent years.

Cricket Ireland Chief Executive Warren Deutrom is anticipating another exciting clash saying , “Following the huge success of the RSA Challenge one-day international at Stormont between Ireland and England, when we came to so close to overcoming the Ashes winners, we are delighted to welcome England's Ashes opponents, Australia, to Dublin next June.”

“Not only do we believe that this match will continue to raise the growing profile of Irish Cricket, but we also believe that the Irish players will have confidence in their ability to properly challenge one of the world's great cricket teams.”

Ireland's most recent clash with Australia came during the Super Eight phase of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. On Irish soil, they were Ireland's opponents during the last international game at Ormeau in 2001, while Eglinton were the hosts in 1997.

You have to go back 16 years to 1993 to find the last time they played in Dublin. On that occasion centuries from Matthew Hayden and Allan Border helped the tourists to a resounding 272 run win. During that game Border almost emulated Sir Garfield Sobers and Ravi Shastri, by hitting the first five balls of an Angus Dunlop over for six. He could only manage two from the final delivery, thus sparing Dunlop an unwanted entry into cricketing folklore.

Further announcements regarding ticket sales, hospitality, and commercial opportunities surrounding the game will be made in due course.
