One more Salary Inquiry (for now :p )

When made an offer for 750 000NOK, how is that?  And for Kristiansand standard?

How comfortable can we be on that?  (wife and I - with plans of baby soon), in a 2 bedroom rental.

You can live a comfortable Norwegian life on such a salary.  If your wife will also be working, then your comfort level will of course rise.

It is a good salary indeed, especially for outside Oslo.

Bethesda: Accommodation is cheaper in Kristiansand than in Oslo - however Kristiansand is more expensive than Frederikshavn in Denmark which is on the other side of the sea - a couple of hours away by ferry.

To put this into perspective : Accommodation costs should be covered (2 bedroom) , food prices are the same throughout the country I think, but just eat at home and bring your lunchbox or buy subsidized food at work - most Norwegians do that.

Transportation costs - you are not going to commute so stick to a monthly bus pass ...

750,000 is fine for 1 person , it's a good salary , but I understand your wife also needs to be supported - but remember that many immigrants to Norway get by by less money - also since you live under the same roof - heat, tv, electricity, internet will be covered without extra costs since it really doesnt matter whether 1 or 2 persons use the light or heat you know :P

Advice: Lower your costs by bringing with you warm winter clothes since it will most likely be cheaper to buy in New York than in Norway.

When you arrive in Norway then either get Lebara mobile cards so you can call home cheap or get some internet phone solution like Telio where you can use the landline to call abroad for free - or perhaps Skype.  Lebara is good for mobiles and it was started by a Sri Lankan in Norway.

Hotels are very expensive throughout Norway so don't expect to find something the day you arrive - you need to buy ahead online to get at least a bit of discount, but try to arrange for accommodation to be ready for you upon arrival or have some appointments for viewings ready ...

www.finn.no is good for accommodation and employment

www.nav.no (go to the English language section) - there you find information for foreigners in Norway, it is a governmental site

Trains/flights: Norwegian Air is a budget airline , and NSB is the national railway, however although expensive you can book at " Mini pris" if you book train journeys WELL in advance and travel for as little as 199, 299 or 399 NOK one way from any point in Norway to another that has a station , e.g Oslo to Bergen or Oslo to Stavanger - otherwise train trips are very expensive in Norway. You could even consider booking your Oslo - Kristiansand one way tickets there for both of you if you can get the 199 Norwegian kroner fare.
