Salary Information

Its a simple question that I cant seem to find a real answer on when i search online.  But how much (nok or usd) does an experienced (6+ yrs) Sr. Software Engineer/Developer earn annually in norway?  specifically, bergen and kristiansand area.

I have interviews coming up and Id like to gain more of an understanding on salary trends.

thanks for your help!

Hello,

There used to be a website which let you fill in some details, and it would tell you which salary to expect. I think it has been taken offline though, since I haven't been able to access it for a while now. It was at http://www.mininntekt.no/. I don't know if you are aware, but Norway makes the incomes of everyone in the country publicly available online. If you know the names of some of the other people who work at the company, you could look them up to see how much they earned after tax. I think the latest year you will be able to get is 2009 though, since now you have to be a registered tax payer to see this information. you can search in the list here: http://www.nrk.no/skatt/

I don't know anything about this field, so perhaps someone else can help. I wouldn't imagine it should be less than 500 000 NOK though.

Good luck,

David

P.S. Do you work for Bethesda at the moment?

Hi!  Thank you for your reply.  Much appreciated.  Im finding it a little difficult comparing cost of living between nyc and norway.  here, my pay is $130,000 before tax and its just ok for manhattan.  So i was wondering if Norway would match that based on their COL.
Im interviewing with a company in Kristiansand.

Bethesda is the name of the angel fountain in NYC's Central Park (by the boathouse).  Its where we live/where we got engaged :) ...

Angel fountain? That sounds enlighting...I have never visited USA but surely I will visit someday.

I do not know much about USA, but I can assure you that in Norway you can expect to pay around 10,000 to 15,000 NOK flat monthly.

Now the thing is that it all depends on how many rooms you require and where, however generally speaking the accommodation costs are very high in Norway.

The best thing to do is for you to go to this website, which is perhaps the largest accommodation site in Norway and then you can type in what type of accommodation you require and where and you can see pictures and costs for it.

You need to choose a town below, so go for Kristiansand.

Life you are use to seem more like that of what you hear or see from diverse places such as Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Seoul and other various places in Gulf Arab countries, East Asia & Southeast Asia - they have these grand hotels , metropolitan lifestyles and huge recreational facilities.

Norway is more like Switzerland in that it is egalitarian, and also where most people do things themselves, ie cooking, cleaning, garden work etc - this is because the minimum wages are so high that only the Queen can afford to have servants :D

enlightening

Im addicted to finn.no....I love looking at real estate.  A lot seems furnished.  I plan on shipping my few pieces of furniture over.  I hope this wouldnt be a prob for future landlord!

Living on what we make in NYC, we just get by.  We live in a tiny apartment, ha ha.  The 2 bedrooms in Kristisand are actually much bigger than what we're living in, so space, or lack of, is not a problem for me - just means theres less to clean!  :D

Yes, please come visit NY - you'll love it!

:D "Simple living - high thinking"

In fact I like your lifestyle, and you get to travel also if you are flexible in regard to accommodation etc.

Yes finn.no is a great site, and most apartments are furnished.

I don't know if you find life in Kristiansand to be too quiet/dull comming from New York - because Kristiansand is like a provincial time, and by 6-7 pm the streets will be more or less deserted.

The location however is good, it's the southernmost part of Norway, but there is also Bergen and Oslo.

Kristiansand is the 5th largest town in Norway.

People say that....since were coming from NY that it would be an adjustment.  Yes, I think the change of pace will be a big adjustment, but if we didnt want it, we wouldnt show interest in NOrway.  And because I feel Oslo is pretty close to NY, i do not want to live there, ha ha.

Both my husband and I have lived in NY all our lives.  This is a change we want.  We really would love to have more time spent with family and friends - its too busy here!  We spend most our time at work - Ick!  Im not saying I hate NY, I love it.  But I also love Norway.  So why not experience both? :)

Is there a difference for you in Norway coming from Denmark?   Im 1/2 Danish (& 1/2 Norwegian), but I never had the chance to visit.

I have only once visited Kristiansand, and I didn't particularly like it. A lot of the architecture I saw was so brutal, and I seem to remember a lot of ugly concrete. Some of the surrounding countryside is nice though, and I have heard the climate is pretty good, or at least milder. I would much prefer to live in Oslo or Bergen.

That was a very nice story about the angel fountain. I have learned something new.
