Tokyo summer

Hi,
I'm a 23 architecture student from NYC, and I will be moving to Tokyo this summer for a job at an architecture firm. I have been looking at apartments and I am torn between two- one is in Shimokitazawa and the other in Kichijoji. I understand that these are both desirable neighborhoods and they both provide a good commute to my job which will be right off the Higashimatsubara station. My bedroom in the Shimokitazawa apartment would be much smaller but I hear that Shimokitazawa has lots of young people my age and is really fun. I've never been to Tokyo and don't know anybody so I'm thinking this might be best for meeting friends. I can also potentially walk to work (25 minutes) from the Shimokitazawa apartment. Kichijoji is also a very easy train commute though and a very nice neighborhood. My impression is that maybe Kichijoji is more of a "family neighborhood" though, so it might be harder to meet people. I could be wrong though.. The apartment and bedroom there would be much bigger.
Any thoughts or info on each neighborhood would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Ariana
