Law enforcement background

Hi all, am new to this site. I have read it with much interest, especially the info from Pennie who has given a realistic approach. Myself and my hubbie are two serving police officers in the uk, we have specialised roles here but that will not count for anything in the states. Lets be honest, unless we divorce each other and marry Americans ( which isn't going to happen) I cannot see any way in which we could obtain a visa! The e2 visa is the only visa that could possibly be applicable but I am aware of the many pitfalls that come with it.  Can anyone tell me if a law enforcement background is a disadvantage when applying for an e2? We would have to rely on a lawyer obviously to assist us with the business plan as we have not owned our own business before. I won't be offended by any blunt replies!

hello Shazzles,
A law enforcement is not a disadvantage when applying for an E2, at least not directly.  An E-2 visa is evaluated largely on qualitative criteria.  So having experience in the field you are trying to invest and start a business in is a plus in the eyes of USCIS.  This said, the most important criteria are things like:
- investment you make has to be "Substantial",
- "Non-Marginal Investment",
- "Active Investment",
- and "Investor Must Be the Source of Funds"

Finding work in your field in the US is not a topic I know much about but there are surely others here that can inform you if you start a discussion thread on this specifically.  Also, anecdotally, I can say I regularly have ran across foreign born police officers in the US, even a couple of foreign national police officers.  The prevalence of municipal police corps with their own rules for selection and little national/federal oversight is probably one of the reasons...

I can share further info by private message but will refrain here as the forum doesn't allow URLs I believe.
