Hi - looking forward to Malta.

Hi,

Greatly looking forward to spending May and June this year on Malta. The posts on this blog have been most helpful, though still narrowing down possible locations to rent accommodation. I'm Scottish, have spent the last 20 years in Brazil, and will be travelling with my Brazilian wife who will be studying English.

While she is in class, I plan to explore the history and culture of the island and do some fishing, socialising etc.

Ideally we'd love to rent a flat for around 600 Euros a month, in a charming historical location, not too touristy, but with a laid back local scene. Proximity to English schools is important, though we have not defined preferance as to location and are very much open to suggestions.

Best regards to all,

Rod and Fernanda.

Hello Rod and Fernanda.

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

So as to make it more visible, your post has been moved to the Malta forum : https://www.expat.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=341

The Housing in Malta section is at your disposal. Do not hesitate to post an advert there. Here is the link ->https://www.expat.com/en/housing/europe/malta/

Thank you,
Aurélie

600 euros a month for a flat will give you plenty of choice. Have you considered Gozo ? There are several language schools here, and rents are generally lower than in Malta, esp when you compared to St Julians/Sliema area where many of the language schools in Malta are.

"in a charming historical location, not too touristy, but with a laid back local scene." - old town Victoria, and then parts of Nadur, Qala, Ghajnsielem, Gharb, Xaghra, well parts of just about any town except Marsalforn or Xlendi would fit those requirements

Many thanks to you and the team for your support, much appreciated.

Rod Mackenzie.

Hi Rod and Fernanda,

even on the 'main' island 600 Euro's will give you some choice!

If you are looking for a laid back and quiet location Gozo could be an option, and it is certainly beautiful but a world on it's own.

Look at both worlds -)))

Cheers
Ricky

Hi George and Ricky,

Many thanks for the replies.

Gozo is definately of interest, we had looked into staying there, though weren't sure about the English school sitaution, I'm now looking deeper.

George, I see you live on Gozo. I cringe when I think of night- clubs that kick off at 10 and go on till the early hours, as I believe is the norm in St. Paul's Bay and St. Julliens, two places we had looked at (mainly because of the concentration of English schools). Give me a public square in the afternoon with a tireless waiter to ply me with wine and goat's cheese and let the dancers dance till dawn over the water. Does Gozo fit the bill?

On a practicle note, is it feasable to arrive on Gozo and find accommodation and a venue for my wife's English course without too much stress? We plan to arrive around April 20th and stay for two months. In our price range of around 600 Euros per month, what could we expect? We aren't looking for luxury, something simple perhaps with a nice view to admire while pondering.

Best regards,

Rod and Fernanda.

We are staying and going to live here in Xaghra on Gozo. We dislike the nightclub scene and we are from the country in UK so we chose Gozo for the quiet etc.
Lovely place to be and so laid back.

Ehere is your wife studying English ?
I can offer you a double room or the whole falt, in an apartment with pool in Qawra... Excellent location and close to all amenities
Should you be interested, send me email on
[email protected]
so I can send you some pics
Best regards
Eileen

The rate for the room is only 180 euro per person every 4 weeks, bills and pool included :)
The complex intself is very quiet, and the residents are decent people..

Hi Eileen,

I would be interested to see fotos of the apartment. We would really prefer a place to ourselves for our two month stay. My e-mail: rodinbrazil(at)hotmail.com

Regards,
Rod Mackenzie.

@ Eileen: Could you please post in the Malta housing section?

Thanks
Armand

thank you

I'm looking closely at Xaghra, seems idealfor us. Is it realistic to find accommodation for around 600 Euros per month for a two month rental period? I've been trying on-line and can only find daily prices which compute to astronomical monthly rates.
Also, any idea if the is good fishing to be had in the region in April, may.
Cheers,
Rod.

LOU

Hi Lou,

in the summer you can just walk along the streets to see which restaurants are looking for staff.

You can also check out the ETC website when it gets closer or after you arrive.

The housing section of the forum also contains many offers - espcially for room sharing to start off with.

In May you should also still get good offers at hotels or hostels.

Bottom line is that you should wait until you are here to decide on accomodation and start checking the ETC website just before you arrive.

What kind of restaurants have you been cooking at ?

Cheers
Ricky

hi Ricky

many thanks:Lou

Hi Lou,

the Suncrest is a well-known tourist hotel in Qawra.

Coming from a Michelin star restaurant in London just make sure you talk about salary before wasting your time in the interview.

I wish you luck.
