Computer repair - data recovery

Does anyone have any recommendations for computer repair shop that speak english? Specifically one that can do data recovery from a fried hard drive.

We've tried a couple of times before and the most reliable stores send their stuff out of town. Only hard drive recovery guys in TP HCM, as far as we have discovered, are cowboys.

Use:

Our company hand-carried a unit to these people in SINgapore and they hav clean rooms, etc.

AND

send the hard drive by JNE Courier (desk in the Main Post Office halfway down on the R/H side unless they moved again). Their prices are about 50% of the usual suspects (DHL, UPS, TNT, etc). They are also based in SIN.

BUT we always BACK-UP and we use RAIDS! Why not invest in a Network Attached Storage System < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_attached_storage > whereby all the data is automatically backed-up. It comes in wired and WiFi flavours.

What os is on the HDD ?

Easiest(cheapest) way is to put it in a usb caddy and hook it up to another pc and then see if you can recover your data that way.

If you need to get to the actual spindles, then as Jaitch says you need to send it to a specialist with clean room etc.
Then it starts to get expensive real quick!

Thanks for the info guys. Win 7 os but the drive won't work in a caddy or another laptop so it looks like worst case scenario. Any idea how much it'll cost?

How much does it cost depends on how bad the situation is.
You mentioned that it's a "fried HDD".

Can you start the computer in the setup mode and see the drive information. Most computer asked you to press F2 during boot up to see this. DO NOT make changes to these information if you are not familiar with them. If you can see the drive, there is hope.

1. If it is fried, then your drive may be ok but the motherboard in the drive is burnt. Change that and test again. Computer repair shop can swap that out.

2. If the HDD is infected by virus and cannot read, then the shop can do a low level access to get rid of the virus

3. If the drive is physically dead. Eg. Motor died or spindle jammed, then this is tough and clean room type recovery is required. Specialist shop does that. I know there are in Singapore not too sure about HCMC. Depends on what is the value of the data you have in the HDD to make it worthwhile to do this. They may need to access your drive to quote.

4. In Google search, key in "hard disk recovery service singapore". you will get a list of companies to call for these services. You can call them, tell them your situation and ask for a quote. Be careful though, they may quote you $X now but when the job is done, it may be $X+Y. it's like sending your bike for repair. They quote $X and when you collect the bike they say they change this and do that. So set the budget first and tell them if cost more than $X do not proceed or inform you first.

5. To all who read this. PLEASE do regular backup to your important data.

Hope above helps.

Contact the  people in my earlier post, they can give you budgetary number.

Hi Keno2,
I know it has been a long time ago since you posted about recovery services. We had  our laptop HDD crushed. Don't know how else do on our own. Tried the BIOS method. Just can't see the drive. I'm thinking about a recovery services in HCMC. Now I'm in Phan Thiet. I would like  to know what was the outcome of your HDD recovery. Did they manage? what about the prices?
Thank you in advance.

Dear Rima21,

If you are here in HCMC, I can support you. Sometimes, if you harddisk is not recognized in BIOS setup, it may be due to mainboard not just harddisk itself

Please contact me when you are back in HCMC

Data Recovery works perfectly well to recover deleted, formatted or inaccessible documents, photos, music, videos, emails and archive files from you hard drive as well as multiple storage devices including external har drive, USB drive, mobile phone, memory card and so on. It takes you only severl simple steps and clicks to get back everything you've lost.

Some steps on how to recover the lost data with Data Recovery:
1. Select types of lost data. All the common file formats are generally classified into six different categories. Only
choose the specific types of the files you need to retrieve will accelerate the scan speed.

2. Choose a location to start searching data. This option is suitable for the situation of a data loss caused by deleting or losing a partition, and re-partition.

3. Scan your computer or device. The process bar displays how long the scan will take.

4. Preview and recover the files. When the preview or search finishes, select the target files and press Recover button to save data again on your device.

IfCoupons.com, an online shop, provides you with various Promo Codes and Coupons for Data Recovery Software - ifcoupons.com/categories/data-recovery/. Don't hesitate to come and get one.

You didn't say why your data is lost so I'm assuming its not the hard drive. This will work with anything, even bypassing passwords as Windows must be on to defend itself. Mount Lupu.iso (Lucid Puppy) on a thumbdrive and simply transfer files to any other local you've hooked up. Portable drives are cheap or make multiple trips with your USB.

If your Bios doesn't read Lupu, likely your motherboard is screwed. You'll need to mount your drive on another computer. If it does, than your OS is probably your problem and viruses a likely cause so Lupu will be able to save your data without getting compromised. You'll then have a safe way to go through your files and remove problems at your leisure.

Best tool I ever had, for computers anyway. Hope it helps.
