i arrived here about 1 month ago too, and i am an architect.

in case you'll are interested, there is an exihbit, Urbanisms, at the link-hybrid (moma) by Holl; his projects in china.  went to the opening last night, cool large scale models/samples and slide shows, not to mention free drinks and hors d'oeuvres.
"The exhibition will be open to the public from May 16-June 30 from 10:00am to 7:30pm.  It is completely open to the public with free admission."

Probably I'm going to be in Beijing the first week of June and could take the opportunity of visiting the exhibit of Steven Holl work.

For those who are interested in getting design books .(overseas ones).  I just discovered that there are ppl that brings them to the office for selection.  CHEAP.  I  bought 2 today for 200.  Or if anyone knows of a good vender pls  give me his contacts! thanks.

I heard rumour there are english versions of the chinese building regulations... anyone know about it.?
