I am relatively new to Malta and divide my time between here and Wales. I was hoping to go on the pill before my next trip back to the UK in December, but don't know how to go about it. Rather than going to the pharmacy and just buying it (I assume there are different types so this could be dodgy) I'm guessing I should see a doctor here first, as it will be my first time on the pill. I have discussed it with my doctors in the UK, so have given it lots of thought. Oh btw, I'd like to be on it not for contraceptive purposes but because I suffer from PCOS. I am also considering the implant.
So basically my questions are:
a) How do I arrange to see a doctor? Do I need to register etc?
b) What good doctors are there in Gozo?
c) What will the costs be, for the consultation and the prescription? I have a Maltese Id-card and an EHIC.

Doctors appointment and The pill in Malta
I would recommend you see a doctor first. With PCOS over here you will be sent to have a scan to check the extent of the problem, they will also monitor you a couple of time per year. They will prescribe the pill for this so you will not have to worry, but they will also give you a thorough assessment at the Polyclinic.

Regarding consultations and cost it is not quite clear as to healthcare coverage in your case.
If you are paying national health contributions in Malta all you need to do is go to a Health Center and get a referral to a specialist.
As you have a Maltese ID card your EHIC card (whether issued in Malta or in the UK) is not valid in Malta. It is only for tourists but not if you declare residency in Malta.
The Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement might not cover PCOS either and only counts for British passport holders with no other coverage but you seem to be entitled through the NHS?
As you share time between Malta and the UK it might not be a good idea to transfer your healthcare entitlement from the UK to Malta as you would not be covered in the UK anymore.
Private healthcare is relatively cheap in Malta but will not cover you for pre-existing diseases (PCOS)
The pills themselves will not be paid for anyway. A private doctor consultation could be around 30-50 € , maybe less in Gozo. Scans and other diagnostic procedures would be charged extra but are probably also cheaper in Malta.
