Hello,

Myself and my husband are looking for some job oportunity at Mauritius. I am from India so I have visa on arrival facility at mauritius and after coming there can we both search job there and settle there? Or else can we do a small business there? how much is expenses incurred in it?

thank you.

Hi rubinak and welcome to Expat.com!

Do not hesitate to browse through the forum, it may help.;)

Harmonie.

Hi,

Your visit visa will be for 2 months and it can be extented upto 6 months. I suggest that you and your wife check into a budget hotel for a couple of days and move into apartment of your choice. If you get a job then it is fine, if you need to start a company , there are many relocation agents who can help you out.

All the best!!!
Terence

Can anyone please help me in some of my doubts? Is selecting maurtius a good option? How much is the pay I can expect if I am working with sales and marketing? What is the minimum wages for hotel workers? If I arrive there on visa on arrival and then search for job is easy or not? please help me in my doubts? In which currency they pay salary and which currency is mostly used?

Thanks.

Please note that if you will be applying for a work permit, instead of an occupation permit, you are not allowed to be in Mauritius .... And certainly not on a holidays visas.  Only those aspiring to an Occupwtion permit can be in the country on a holidays visa.  You will be called to leave the country of you attempt to apply for a work permit while being ion a holiday visa and chances are that your subsequent application will not even be accepted.

OH, It means I can apply for occupation visa? what are the conditions for it? documents required? Are you at Mauritius?

I'd advise you to have a look on www.investmauritius.com , the official BOI website. If you still need clarifications inbox me.

hi

@ rubinak:
Looking for a job from India before coming here is best for you. My mother in law is here. She has been looking for job on a tourist visa and nobody would hire her due to the fact that she does not have a work permit/occupation permit. No company would take the risk of hiring you while you are on a tourist visa. I have a company myself and companies got a lot of rules to follow before hiring somebody, especially from abroad!

If you want to set up your business, you have to fulfill one of the following:
The following categories of persons are eligible for Permanent Residence Permit:
1. An investor having held an Occupation Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit and whose company's turnover exceeded Rs 15 million every year during each of these three years in respect of each shareholder of the company.
2. A self-employed having held an Occupation Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit and whose income exceeded Rs 3 million every year during
each of these three years
3. A professional having held an Occupation or a Work Permit for three years immediately preceding the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit, and who has drawn a basic monthly salary of at least Rs 150,000 during the entire three year period.
4. A retired non-citizen having held a Residence Permit for three years and who has transferred to Mauritius 40,000 USD or its equivalent in convertible currency annually during each of these three years.

As far as staying here for your holidays, I can help you . Contact me on 00 230 9293021.

You can get a job in a hotel. But then French is important. Also, a third language such as spanish, italian, german will be a definite advantage. Its not hard but you can still try. They will pay in Mauritian rupees.

Good luck in your endeavour.
Regards. Disha

Thanks alot Disha for your kind reply..But I have heard that I can come on visit visa and then I can apply for occupational permit. Please tell me about it in detail.

Thank You.

You can come on a tourist visa and apply for Occupation permit (OP). 4 categories of OP exist:

- investor : invest US$100,000 in your business & generate Rs4 million annual turnover

- professional : get a job with more than Rs45,000 monthly salary. Rs30,000 if in IT sector

-  self-employed: for liberal profession. Invest US$35,000 and make Rs600,000 annual turnover

- Retired: send US$40,000 per year for your subsistence & expenses.

These are the four only schemes that allow you to come on a Tourist visa.

Thanks Nadeem and Disha but still I am not able to get a job from here. Very confused.

Hello Rubinak,

One thing you have not told us is what are your qualifications and those of your husband? In what exactly are you specialised?

What you need to know above all else is that you will need to find a job with a salary of at least Rs. 30,000 for a work permit and Rs. 45,000 for an occupational permit if you want to work as a professional. Both you and your husband need to be working if you want to have a residnce permit in Mauritius.

Needless to say that these salaries are considered high pays locally and if you and your husband are not highly specialised people your chances to get such a salary decreases.

In order to be able to help you, please give details of what you want to do as a professional in Mauritius.

good luck!

I am graduate with Economics and have more than 4 years of experience in sales, marketing, teaching, finance. I have experience at India and Australia. My husband is good at hotel side he have experience in cooking and hotel industry. We both are looking for jobs only currently or can we do like starting a small shop there?

A small shop for food or some Indian commodities?

Thank You.

Hi All,

I had a question, might sound a bit different however I would still like to know.
I have a Professional Occupational Permit and currently employed in Mauritius and staying for some time. What I wanted to know, but could not find any information in BOI/MU Gov website is as follows:
If I want to start a small part time business, maybe employ a couple of people but still keep my existing job, is that possible to do with the Professional Occupational Permit. Will be able to apply for trading/other licenses/permits as an expat and do it.

The reason I ask is there is a lot of information on application etc but not much on what you can or cannot do.

If you have any useful links or information can you please share.

Cheers!!

Your question is a classic.  What i'm going to give you as information is quite sensible.

Nothing prevents you from opening your own company EXCEPT if your employer prevents you from doing so, in your contract. With your own company you can launch and operate your business, employ people, etc. Now this is 100% legal.

I say this is sensible because once the BOI tried to challenge this advice, they failed as it is legal. We have many Professionals or self-employed using this for their 'side-businesses'.
