Hope you enjoy your time in the dominican republic.  It is a beautiful country and the people are amazing.  What area are you looking for.  Punta Cana is known for it's all inclusives and beaches but not for long stay. Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarette are on the North Coast and you will find communication easy..Sosua has great beaches and nightlife...Garden Condos rent short and long term and within walking distance to everything.  Cabarette kite surfing and beautiful beaches, Rio San Juan and Cabrera nice little quaint quiet towns,fishing towns...should be able to speak Spanish as locals do not speak englich.  Cabrera nice place to stay with pool, bar, food and beautiful rooms, owners are on sight and so nice El Mirador.   Hope this helps
