Hi kimngan and welcome to Expat.com!

Your thread has been moved to HCMC forum for better visibility.;)

Hope that you'll soon be given some tips.

Harmonie.

Hi Kimngan...

I have heard good things for this place:

JUST MEN
40 Ton That Thiep, Q1 Tel: 3914 1407

Grooming salon for men which, as well as its standard hairdressing services (starting from VND200,000), offers massages for the tired executive, with a head, shoulder and neck massage costing VND150,000. A good place to escape the hustle and bustle of Saigon.

I have not been here personally as I shave my own head but hear it is good for foreigners. The link above takes you to the Word magazine's website which lists some other places too.

On Le Thanh Ton, walking from downtown direction starting at Hai Ba Trung, which is to say against the direction of the traffic, you will find two hairdressers/stylists on the right hand side.

The first is 50 metres from Hai Ba Trung.

Skip the first one, unless you are on an expense account,the next one is 50 metres on.

It's got a golden sign with Unisex something as a name. Very professional, good service, for men and women. Straight haircut for men is VND100,000. Open every day from 09.00H (Almost opposite the Lancaster building.

Is foreign hair any different from Vietnamese hair? Surely if a hoc toc establishment is good enough for local Saigonese, it's good enough for foreigners. Does your husband have particularly exotic hair? dreads, extensions etc?

Obviously you have never exposed your hair to the basic SaiGon barber.

I like my hairdresser to:
(1) have a door on his place of business;
(2) have a roof so he doesn't have to cover my head when it rains;
(3) have mirrors in front of me as well as behind me;
(4) use electric powered tools, rather than hand-powered;
(5) have a comfortable, padded, chair rather than a hard stool;
(6) have a light source when the skies darken;
(7) have disinfecting/sterilising procedures.

As a bonus:
(9) have  video screen to look at whilst you wait;
(9) employ cute 20-somethings to pamper me.

Typical street barber!

Next you will be suggesting I stop using cotton buds and use the services of a street ear-scraper.

P.S. How do you know you are not picking up hair lice/fleas when you visit your typical barber?

live somewhere else then mate if you don't like it

I've had the same guy cutting my hair for over 19 years. He comes to my house every other Sunday afternoon, I provide the hair cutting equipment and everything else required. No worry about the hygiene factor. Not a bad rate either, 20,000VND a cut.

for guys, probably not and i'm more than happy to go to the hot toc to get my monthly scalping, heck if my viet was better i'd even use the guy on the street :)

for western women I am assured that the difference in hair and the way it is treated is very different. I think that's more to do with colours and treatments rather than cut n wash though.

That's 3 times everywhere else.... and not even on expenses!

Plenty of good hot toc's around that are clean, hygienic and most importantly good at cutting hair :)

Try a couple out and find one that you like andd jobs a good un :) Ok so you may get a few dodgy haircuts in the testing phase, but tbh I get my hair cut every 4 weeks or so, none of the haircuts I've had have been so bad I can't wait another 4 weeks to get it sorted.

What more do pampered expats want? Anyone ever heard of adapting to local cultures. I have never had a bad haircut in many years and never had lice or whatever. You need to get your ears cleaned here as streets so dirty, cotton buds won't suffice i'm afraid. The guy there is right vnd100,000 is expensive for haircut. I can get a mirror, fan, tv, shave, haircut, ears done, hair washed and neck and head massage for 90,000. Toffs are careless.

JAITCH  YOU KNOWTHEWAY –COOL PIC

GOOD ADVICE  for people that like to get a shave / scalp  (bald) themselves/ others do(tommycoyne) = you SHOULD bring your own RAZOR. There is nothing like a good shave in V.N. WHEN HYGENICS ARE IN PLACE. Most places you can bring your own shampoo/ conditioner/color, etc. You will find most V.N. babers/hair designers very eager to give good service but unwilling to speak ENGLISH or give you some  Advice( only do -bring a picture if you have any style= being bald is easy). Yes I've seen lice in expat hair= in Asia, but there is a very good over the counter shampoo to combat that= no need to think you must shave your own head(i did).  I hope this will help some people (kimngan) . So many tattoo places popping up and I worry about that ( hygenics/ standards)  Tommy maybe you can tell me the dif between a Western Hospital and a local V.N. HOSPITAL ?

i tell you what hunter i'll do a 12-month study on western and vn hospitals just for your business' benefit.

@richard hunter - Please try to lower caps lock when writing! Thank you. :)

Hi,

I know a barber shop for men in Phu My Hung, male hair cut very nice. In particular, there is a team of enthusiastic, professional, very good English communication.
Address: SB 2-1, Apartment Building 1, 17 Street, Tan Phu Ward, Phu My Hung, District 7

Thanks,

can go to 139 hai ba trung salon mash mash the can do a good haircut

I have another thread but I suppose I'll ask here too. Anyone know a place in VN that does nice hair dyeing? My hair is dyed blonde and I'm looking to keep it that way, but the roots are starting to grow out. Does anyone recommend a place?

[Moderated]. Will post in the HCMC business directory soon. Best of luck in your search.

Wow quite an agressive post for hairdressing! love it!;) I would have to say that western hair is completely different than Oriental hair. Having worked in London, Hong Kong and Spain, i would like to say that we all have different kind of hair and texture. If you are a guy and that would like a good hairstyle why not? Why do you have to go and sit on the side of the road and have your head shaved just because you live in that country, the same as anyone coming from Asia wouldnt have to sit in a hairsalon in London if they preferred to go to the barber.
And for women wanting to get a good colour or highlights then they are no way going to go to the local salon!!
It is all to do with choice and what you want! Nothing to do with adapting to different cultures but looking as you would like!
I am a hairdreser/makeup artist and have travelled the world, I take note of what people want and how they live.

Since this was bumped, I'll highly recommend Dada Salon, Sky Garden I, Phu My Hung. It's Korean owned with Korean standards (aka very high) The woman speaks English, Korean and Vietnamese and is highly talented and kind. I picked out a haircut from a Japanese magazine and she made it look exactly like it. She's lightening fast, too. It's also quite hilarious to watch her flock of (stylish) Viet apprentices in training follow her all over the place and watch her work her magic like a hawk.

A haircut for my husband and myself came to 500,000vnd including tip, worth every Uncle Ho! I paid $90 for the same Korean quality in US, so it's a fair price to me.  ;)

haha love how we're bumping this old thread....but thanks for the tip! I was planning on cutting my hair before I came to VN but maybe I'll wait....was your hair cut (I'm assuming individually yours would have cost around 300k vnd?) just the cut/styling? I'd want to get my hair permed and possibly dyed- not sure if that would cost an arm and a leg or not.....

i love cutting mt and have a great neck massage that come with in.
had my hair perm and cut at karon hair salon in tran quan khai district 1
was very happy with , very stylish salon but at a affortable price and the service was friendly

Anyway, I like the title of the thread  :)  even though it's bit old one!

Hi Kimgan My self Dia i am from India. I don't know foreigner hair stylist. I must say when you and your boy friend visit in India, then i will suggest you the best Hairstylist in India. Even you will have no need to find anywhere.

The OP(Kimngan) never visit here after the post in 2012  :)
Anyway, Dia seems like an international hair care specialist !
