Nairobi or Mombasa ??

Hi everyone,

I'm going to Kenya in June for 5 or 6 months of Internship. I have 2 choices : Nairobi or Mombasa. What would you choose ?

About accommodation, is it easy to find an apartment ? even in collocation ? and what about the price ?

If you have any advice about the life there I would take it !

Thanks, take care !

Vic

I recommend Mombasa because it is a good tourist Destination for Tourists in Kenya, Nairobi on the other hand is not that friendly to tourists :)
Plus you can easily find accommodation in Mombasa with ease

thanks fbownz !

When you say it is a good tourist destination, does it means that it is full of tourist ?

And do you have an idea of the cost of a room in an apartment ? And about food, without eating imported stuf ?

Thanks

Hi Vic39, you say that you are coming for a six month internship if you have already secured it then where is the posting? if you haven't then your choice of where to stay will be determined by the kind of internship you are looking for.  Nairobi is the capital city and the hub for many international non-governmental organisations.  It therefore makes sense to probably locate yourself in Nairobi if you are targeting these organisations, if on the other hand you wish to secure an internship with a local-based NGO then you can target those with offices and/or projects in Mombasa and/or Nairobi.

You can find properties to suite your budget, if you don't mind basic accommadation in less affluent districts, there are plenty! Ksh 10-25,000 could get you an unfurnished two bed flat in Nairobi.  A room in a shared flat in the more affluent areas can set you back 25-50,000 per month depending, again, on your taste and pocket. With just a few months in Kenya a flat share would be better as you have a ready group of contacts to help you find your way around the place.

Mombasa is nice but it's limited in what it offers when compared with Nairobi.  Life in Mombasa appears, though I could be wrong, to evolve around the beach, pubs and clubs and as a lone traveller can be difficult to make friends/ socialise as most people are either on holiday or in transit.  There are lots of tourists in Mombasa but it is possible to experience the other side of Mombasa away from the tourists - again be selective on where you live/eat/ entertain yourself.

I hope this helps. Enjoy your stay!

Hi vic
First of all you should confirm where your internship is going to be. Whether it would be in Nairobi or if it would be in Mombasa.
After you have confirmed then we would be in a position to advice on accommodation travel etc

thanks for your answers !

Now I know I ll be in Nairobi on the 15th of July till november or december. I ll get a little bit of money there so I am looking for a cheap place to leave, no luxury needed ! A share flat would be perfect indeed !

My office will be at Mombasa Road, PO Box 52612-00200, so if I can have an appartement close to that place it could be awsome !

Hi Vic39,

I suggest you to post an advert in the Mombasa housing section. It might help you.

There are housing apartments on Mombasa road, you can opt for South B estate which is accessible, or even Athi river. Various places basically on that route.
