La Defense is not the nicest area in Paris - good for business, not for tourism 
You should better find an hotel in the center

Best and most central part of Paris is around the Opera Garnier - Arr. 9.. especially if u want to explore the city.. its the most central area.

14 is a beautiful one
but I also suggest the 8th.
you can check them out in Wikipedia, it gives you a good review of them and what places in each one.
