Butchers in HCMC

Hi Guys,

Can anyone contribute to a good butchers in HCMC. We have tried one butchers that sell Australian import meat (only beef), but this was quite a strange place.... literally walked into a back room consisting of a huge freezer and lumps of flesh wrapped in cling film. We were expecting soomething a little more like a butcher that will or has prepared various types of meats.

If anyone knows somewhere please let me know.

Also, what sort of prices for meats are people paying. We were quoted 600K VND per kilo of Beef! this seems like extortion to me....

Cheers

Hi Mr Wilson
This is a nice Butcher Shop in District 7 - Phu My Hung - travysbutchershop.com/index.php
Also, Metro An Phu has sort of like a supermarket butchershop setup and they have unfrozen Australian Beef.... Vegedys on Le Thanh Ton street has imported US Ribeye and NY strip wrapped in packets....fresh not frozen....
yes 500,000 or 600,000 a kilo is typical for imported beef....

wow! 500,000 or 600,000 a kilo of imported beef seems like extreme. It's hard to swallow.

Lotte - the one in Q10 on 3/2 Street - has great meat, fresh, clean, well presented and no smell.

Same with their Fish/Seafood section.

The Lotte in Q7 is not as good or as clean.

Nhu Lan (50 Ham Nghi and on Hai Ba Trung just above Vo Thi Sau) has good, fresh deli supplies. They have their own wholesale deli meat processing processing plant (Hai Ba Trung) that uses very modern US-made processing and packaging machinery.

The butchers shop on Pasteur is now closed.

VEGGYS in District 1, second floor, they have OMAHA steaks and USDA Choice cuts, lamb, pork, etc..

OK melba525 that's it. I'm packing the cooler with ice and heading up to VEGGIES.... Thanks for the tip.

hahaha Budman you've made me laugh, that's EXACTLY what my husband and I do every weekend!.

Let me know how it went ;)

Well what I'd like to do is try shopping at these stores all in one day. Only one small problem. I'm not familiar with Saigon, and haven't been up there for quite a few years anyway, and the new driver we just hired isn't that familiar with the places either. Coming from Can Tho how would I best be able to visit all the stores listed in a timely manner?

Apperciate any advice.

Budman, you can walk quite easily between Veggys and Annam Gourmet in about 5-10 mins if that. Can't miss either of them :)
Tracy's is the only one you;d need to drive to from D1 :)

Hey Budman, let me know how Veggy's is. I'm willing to pay a premium as long as it's not frozen and has good percentage of fat running through it. Back home I ate dry-aged prime grade of beef every week, so needless to say I miss it!

Also if any fellow americans see something along the lines of tropicana orange juice please let me know. People say that you can get it anywhere, but I'm not talking about the cartons of OJ that they serve on airplanes. Looking for something like Tropicana, Florida's natural or simply orange. I've been to Metro, all the Citimarts but can't seem to find anything remotely close.. Thanks!

laidbackfreak, Thanks for the tip. I think I'll pass on Tracys this trip though.

JVo18, Sure will, like you I don't mind paying a few extra bucks for something, if it's what I want. I'll keep an eye out for the OJ also.

an other address. KIM HAI butchery in Le Thi Hong Gam, D1... I do not remember the number but it is opposit I LOVE NEW YORK cafe.... They have quite good quality of imported beef and other choice..... 600k/ kg for imported beef is really expensive. i think go to KIM HAI you will happy with their product such as rib eyes ( our favorist) or lamp tenderloin.... Cheers....

I'll have to remember to stop by Veggy's and Annam Gourmet one of these days. Went to Veggy's before and wasn't impressed; but I didn't know they had an upstairs either.

If I may recommend, if you truly want fresh squeeze OJ, just buy the oranges and squeeze them yourself. I love drinking pulp OJ and it's just as good coming straight from the fruit. The OJ that you buy in the store is good to mix in too.

But I recall seeing Tropicana here. I'll try to look out for it and remind myself where next time.

Thanks Budman - I actually might go this weekend so I'll give a report on what they carry if I do.

Phi, I do make fresh homemade OJ with oranges from the market. It's obviously more fresh and probably more healthy considering nothing is added to it, but there's just something about the orange juices that I mentioned. I grew up drinking Tropicana since I was 3 and to me, it beats the freshly squeezed variety.

If you do happen to come across it, let me know :)

Thanks

Jerry

Hello Jerry,

How about this for you?

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6Mv6LpCYZmA/TQwt2tosfwI/AAAAAAAAAyc/kEQaTQq45iY/s320/tropicna-twister01.jpg

Not sure if its the same from you growing up since I don't recall drinking Tropicana much back in the States. But the Tropicana Twister I found is sold at Central Mart inside Saigon Pearl; retails for 8,500 VND for regular size. I've seen it else where at Circle K, a convenient store in TP HCM, too.

METRO carrys it too, but I don't think it's the same thing Jerry's looking for.

Yes I figured. If he's really looking for Tropicana OJ, 100% orange juice, that stuff grows on trees in the US. :D

Hi Phi,

Thanks for your help! Unfortunately that's not it. It looks like
this.

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/shortorder/tropicana%20old.jpg

or in a smaller bottle

http://content.costco.com/Images/Content/Product/12529b.jpg

I've come to the conclusion that I'll never find it here and will have to drink rather large quantities when I head back to the states for a couple weeks in a couple months (which is what I usually do haha)

Thanks again.. By the way Phi, are you here in Vietnam for work?

I'll keep a look out. I like my orange juice with extra pulp and 100% orange juice. Sometimes I'm lazy to squeeze it myself. Maybe I should hire someone to do it; or my gf.

Originally came to Vietnam because of my father. Almost one year ago he suffered a stroke. I dropped everything in the US and flew to Vietnam. Haven't been back since.

Spent the year looking for opportunity. Boy, it has been a learning experience. Depending what type of business you are working in, it's tremendously different and tough.

Maybe I should look to develop orange juice similar to Tropicana and sell it in Vietnam. I'd know where to find my first customer thats for sure. ;)

Hey Phi, I'm sorry to hear about your father. Wish him the best.

Figured I would let you guys know that I went to Metro earlier and bought a whole USDA choice New York Strip that weighed in at 5.25 kg or roughly 11.50 lbs. It doesn't say what grade of choice
(there are 3 grades for every class of beef depending on marbling), but it looks pretty good and considering I have not had any US beef since I've been here, I can't imagine I will have any complaints. The price I paid including VAT was 425,000/kg. The total price for the 5.25kg was roughly 2,200,000 or roughly $105USD. A little pricey but it's a big cut of meat and I will cut it up into 14-16 oz portions and individually freeze them until I'm ready. (Can't imagine they will stay in the freezer long!) It's something I used to do at home since buying bulk is obviously a little cheaper and as long as its wrapped tightly and eaten within a reasonable period of time, there is close to no loss of flavor.

I understand for some it is a pain to shell out over 100 USD, but it is cheaper than the 600,000/kg other members are reporting at Veggy's and if you're a huge steak eater like me, its worth it. I also understand that not everyone is comfortable buying a whole Strip and cutting it themselves. But it really isn't that complicated, and in the end you get the scraps and can make delicious stock for beef barley or french onion soup.

FYI, they also had Australian New York Strip and Australian Beef Tenderloin (filet mignon). The Australian NYS is cheaper than the US cut - roughly 360,000/kg, but I'm not a big fan of Australian cattle unless its Wagyu

PS - Haha Phi if you sold Tropicana here you could retire off of me alone

JVo18, thanks for the information. I don't mind spending $100.00 on a good cut of USDA NY strip, but the METRO down here only carrys it frozen. Cutting up that much meat and refreezing it isn't a healthy idea for me. They did have the other day a few  1-1/2 in. 16oz NY strips (USDA) there was only two left and there in my freezer  right now ready for the BBQ grill this week-end.

Hi,

Not sure about the Juice but you could try the stores (there are two beside each other) on Ham Nghi Street between the two big Nhu Lan bakeries. Veggies is a rip off and their vegetables are often rotten and they try to charge full price of them. At Ham Nghi street its much cheaper for the same thing. Also they will try and get stuff for you if you are a frequent customer.

They sell meat but only frozen. They have hundreds of line items. They have a small selection of vegetables at the back. I think you will find everything you need there.

If you want fresh organic vegetables. Get online to [moderated] they bring fresh organic vegetables and some selected (meaning they chose the farmers that use less pesticides) from Dalat every morning. They deliver too.

I like lamb so I buy it from the Halal stores as they fly it in. My wife said only certain Vietnamese eat mutton which is why you don't find it everywhere.

I usually bring a complete Boneless RibEye (approx 5-6 kg) with me each time I come. I freeze it before leaving and put it in my 'carry-on' bag. By the time I get to VN, it is thawed but still cold. I have never had anyone at customs bat an eye at it ... not sure if I'm supposed to bring it or not.

If anyone knows of a good place to grill out, I can bring one with me (I arrive Sep 17th) and we can have a combination Expat Meet-up / grill out. Any takers?

Do they sell lamb/mutton?

Just Aus Beef only

Thanks for your reply, @australianbeef2012

@australianbeef
Could you PM me your phone number please? I tried to find your shop but couldn't locate it by Scooter. Thank You.

Hi,
Already PM you. Sorry for inconvenience caused

Hi
I happened to visit a shop today in Le Thanh Ton street. They shall beef imported from Newzealand. The price quoted for Tenderloin or Flanksteak is startling cheap compared to the market. It's about 14USD(299.000VND) for one chilled kilo of tenderloin(not frozen!). This is not normal beef but bullocks. So anyone have tried this? Why is it so cheap

This business provides prices and home delivery it says
I haven't tried them yet, I have only looked at the website..
This is just to update that old 2012 post.
There is also the Vissan chain and Metro chain.
Search for Heo & Ga prices under suppliers etc..

dinhphongits.com.vn/#!home-page/cjvv

is there any good butchers in HCM or Can Tho where I can buy Bacon and Sausage   ....besides  CO -OP or Metro

How can my wife get a METRO MART a TRADE card (TAX number required ) for her shop?

Hi @Chinabob, have you been to An Nam Gourmet in District 1, 2 and 7? They're French owned selling mainly imported goods. Their deli looks a lot better than any other shops I have been to in Vietnam. http://www.annam-gourmet.com/

And if you want good quality beef and lamb, check out Dinh Phong Butcher in District 1, 2 and Saigon Pearl. They specialise in premium Australian beef and Lamb (not mutton). The best meat I have had in Vietnam, they even have fresh Wagyu! (which is a very rare here) http://www.dinhphongits.com.vn/#!home/c4xc

Hi @ehjay, Dinh Phong Butcher sell great meat. I bought their meat from the District 2 store for a bbq on Australia Day, and just felt like I was back home. Juicy, tender and flavoursome! but a bit dearer than Metro and Vissan.
They have an english site so check it out guys. http://www.dinhphongits.com.vn/#!home/c4xc

Halal stores fly fresh Oz meat into VN. And they deliver.

There is an older post with lists of Halal stores.
