this one needs VPN service (proxy)
http://www.my-expat-telly.com/uk-live-tv.php

Wow the Smart TV box option i think is really expensive ...

But thanks for the heads up Toon nice to see there is still more out there...

BTW What ever happened to Jim is he still in Malta ??

Julian

yeah it is - or at least i think it is (when you compare it with jimiptvs unit(via shs at swieqi - only about £50) then £15 per month.... but it largely depends onn output quality.

id be happy if i could find a tv that had the i-players included and enabled to use abroad with out the need for a proxy and laptop.

there are smart tvs out there that have these included in their apps for internet but am not sure if they can be used here despite being sold here and advertised as being able to receive BBC iplayer....i did check with Toshiba Malta and their Toshiba Places apps,,but they had never tried it....so its all guesswork really

anyway i will keep my eyes peeled

I think jim is in Uk on business - has been since before christmas.  i think the selection has to be based on requirements and quality of service (i.e picture quality and stability)...the financial side is secondary in my opinion as if i were to have a great UKTV service it wouldnt worry me to much what it cost. British tv services via vpn proxys are a little unstable and buffer too much, even the good ones.... and I would much rather have a set top box rather than a permanently cable linked pc.

I agree with you there, a settop Box is definetley going to be better although it is just a linux box in the end with software enabling it to run.  I have looked (but not in detail) at the Boxee but need to go deeper into it..

Think if you could add the service to an existing Dreambox or Linux based Satellite receiver... best of both worlds :)

Julian

oh i so agree julian....pity we couldnt add the i-player streams to the dreambox like the existing bbci streams.....I alos looked at the boxeea, the LG unit and there is another one that filmon are tryiong out...but they are still a long way form providing what we britsih ex pats want...i have a WD Live tv hub media player and although you can connect to youtube and facebook and other content - it being american they cater for the US market and not the british market i have written to them and filmon to see about including the UK i players bit so far no repsonses. However, i am now writing to sony and toshiba to find out if their smart tvs that have internet connectivity and apps will work here in malta to get BBc i-player, 4OD and Demand5 - we get itv anyway so thats not an issue...

I had a older Western Digital Live Box but that didn't include the network, I got rid and bought an Acer Revoview 100 which according to them did Youtube etc... That was a NO !! but it does play everything i throw at it and it connects to the PC to stream movies, music and photos from that it also comes with a built in hdd (320gb) aquired it from Mike when he left brand new and only used for testing. so in all, 2 x usb ports, 1 x RJ45 network, 1 x usb wireless, hdmi and composite, built in 320gb hdd .... and i have just got the new firmware.... will see whats on that :)

Highly recommend it for what i want to do with it.. I am hoping the OB S11 turns up soon so I can play with that :)

J.

my WDTV LIve hub has 1TB built in and does much the same...i have two usb ports for a further 1TB and a 500GB HDD so more than enough for storage for music(29000) fotos(10000) movies(600) tv shows (1200) etc....

God luck with the open box let me know how you get in with that ( i read a few reviews and was little disappointed and very wary of what might be sent) as am getting more and more interested in the CS thing and learning about what can be achieved with the linux technology...am looking out for an old used 500 just to tinker with...my DM800HD SE is due next week although there is a new box out its an Edison open linux box 450mhz processor and does more or less the same as the DB. But to be honest as a hobby even paying £50-£60 for a box to tinker with is not too bad is it.

Hi Guys, just dropped in when I saw the current topic of discussion... glad to see that it remains current!

J. Happy that the revo is working OK and yep, it is a nice little box but a little limited on processing when really pushed!

Re FilmOn, Alki is throwing lot's on it at the moment but his focus is the US market and a few new toys he is currently playing with (oh to be an eccentric billionaire)

Jim is still over here and constantly working upon his offerings so hopefully, the service he provides over there is still pretty good ...

Wish we could have helped out more and maybe at some point we will return to the market but as you have so rightly pointed out... it will not be until a good and affordable media centre can be delivered :)

Mike

Hiya Mike,

Glad to see your still around and thanks for the unit, I am finding it very good....

Hope everything with the family is going well and we can see you in the sun here soon.

J.

hi J - where did you get your open box from? please let me know how  you get on with it as am keen to take this up as a hobby as i have a spare dish feed and could do with learning some linux stuff.

Hi Toon,

The Roku devices are preset to run channels selected by Roku, various VoD film providers (including the new netflix UK) and very limited browser use...

At the moment, no UK FTA channels and no catch-up players (iPlayer etc)

The Roku UK partner is VisionIPTV who intend putting some specialised channels on but in the main it is simply a fixed playout device...

The other problem is that I suspect they will be geo-locked to local IP address ranges so at best that would still require a VPN to use in Malta.

Out of interest, has anyone tried using their sat system to pick up the UK channels on Astra2N?

Mike

yeah i pick up ch5 and itv and plus 1 but have had to go to a 1.6-1.8m dish to dos so.....
you cant get them on anything less really - well saying that you can on a 1.2m but only just and with a lot of blocking and freezing and if the weather is bad forget it. they are on week transponders as they are aimed at UK only viewing

we used to get them on a 1m dish but since they gone to 1N forget it.

Hi Everyone, hope you are able to help.
My In-laws have been living in Malta for 4 years now.
They are not technically minded at all and wish to get access to UK TV especially BBC channels.
They currently have a UK satellite system (i dont think i can say how as i think it might be bending the rules).  They get lots of UK but cannot pick up from the Astra 2D so no BBC
They want to get BBC and ITV channels. But they want to be able to use a record feature very much like sky+ from an EPG.
They went to DREAMBOX SATELLITE CENTRE and they said they were being sold a dreambox 500HD.  But i dont know if thats what they needs and it sounded very expensive.
They dont have a computer or internet connection at the moment, but are happy to get broadband though.  They are not technically minded at all.
I was looking at http://www.shsmalta.com/ and their system?
Anyone know if its very good.  I am visiting in April and would like to sort something out then but ideally like to get heads up before i arrive

i can put you in touch with someone to help you if you wish

i have messaged you

I use Expat Network VPN, which lets you watch BBC ITV CHANNEL 5 and All4 live, catch ups and downloads where applicable.

You have just replied to a post from 2012 and a VPN simply hides your IP address so you are able to access BBC iPlayer and similar.
