I am actually in Brisbane. I've been living abroad for awhile(feel like an expat in my country) and returned here a few weeks ago. I started looking for meetup groups here on expatblog, but I haven't limited myself to it. Why don't you try MeetUp Melbourne( I googled Meetup Brisbane just by chance). I  have joined a few groups (diverse interests). Give it go.
