Life and Work in Libya

Hello,

For the past couple of years I have worked as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan.  I enjoy the expat lifestyle but it looks like I will not renew next year, so I am thinking of other places.

It's difficult to find online postings of jobs in Libya, which is to be expected given the transitional nature of the government, but are there expat jobs to be had for people who are already there?  I have skills in project management and environmental/ urban planning.  I don't speak French or Arabic... just English.  I've never worked for a petrochemical company.

What's day-to-day life like currently?

Sounds like visa requirements are in a state of flux.  The U.S. embassy has information that's wildly out of date.  Is it realistic to assume I could get a visa to visit the country for a couple of months, look for work in that time, and if I found an employer who was hiring, I might be able to get a work visa?  Or would it be better to find employment before going to Libya?

Thanks.

Jimmy

Hello Jimmy,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

Wish you all the best in your search.

Rouma

Rouma, thanks, and I appreciate your reclassifying the topic to work.

Personally, I would find the job before coming.  Too many things in flux to do it all on your own.

A great online job site is this:  http://www.libyaninvestment.com/libya-job/jobs.html

Once you get an offer of employment your employer will assist you with your visa.  As for how things are right now.....it really depends on who you talk to.  One good site which you can translate with google translate is:  http://www.wdintripolis.blogspot.com/   He has some good info on doing business in Libya.  Good luck with your search!
