why are flights to POP more than to PUJ

Hi just wondering if anyone can explain why all the flights I am finding to Puerta Plata in January are more expensive than to Punta Cana Any suggestions

For some unexplained reason it seems that the taxes are higher in POP. Makes no sense to me and is actually hurting the tourist industry here on the north coast.
Many are flying to Santiago as cab fare to the Puerto Plata area for a family or group of 4 is only a hundred dollars or so and usually a family of four can save hundreds of dollars by flying to Santiago.

i guest its more expensive because there're more people go to punta cana than puerto plata .

Punta Cana,

Punta Cana is a private airport and the owner tries his best to attract tourism. Mr. Rainieri has made the area what it is. The others airports on the island are probably run by the government so they charge what they want.
