I've been playing with a little more video.
Enjoy.

@mas Fred - the more i see on this bridge, the more concerned i get :o
Up the road footage seems abit more pleasant though :)

Good pics - keep them coming in ;)

Jaz

@champagne_socialist - welcome to Expat.com ;)
I'm sure mas Fred's picture book of Indonesia will give you a good insight of the country ;)
enjoy your stay ;)

Jaz

@champagne_socialist - You're welcome :)

Yes i agree too - mas Fred has captured some amazing pictures of Indonesia and the daily life there. An excellent "Picture Story book of Indonesia" as i call it ;)

Jaz

Thank you for the kind comments.
I just wander around trying to see what would be interesting to people that are unfamiliar with Indonesia.
The original thread has been running for over four years so there's a lot of old stuff yet to be posted.
I try to go to places most Indonesians never see, trying to capture life that no one ever bothers looking at.

Just a hobby really but I'm happy you're enjoying the thread.
I'll try to dig out some of the more interesting snaps from before I started this thread.

A street with a wall.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P5200003.jpg

I wonder what UK health and safety regulations would have to say about this.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P5200004.jpg

"Sue, sue" shouted the lawyers, not even considering their wives or girlfriends.

The total lack of safety concerns on Indonesia's roads starts as soon as Indonesians can get on the roads..........if they can get on their bikes.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P5200001.jpg

It seems he can.

You can't drink the water here.
Many do after a good boil but I won't.
The main reason is I've seem people "plopping" in rivers that are used to supply tap water - no thanks.
That in mind, bottled water is the norm. Aqua is a well known, quality brand - the brand I always use at home.
Those bottles, like all good distribution network, are delivered to a central warehouse for each area and distributed from there.

Large trucks are idea but there can be problems.

He's trying to get a jack in place

He managed

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/PICT0059.jpg

At least they filled in most of the hole afterwards.

The team in Domino's are a rare old laugh.
They just got a new manager in my local branch - keen as mustard and eager to motivate his people.

:o:o:o Eeeewwww!!
safe bet sticking to bottled water :)

I Still enjoy seeing the pics you post up on this forum.. :D
The one of the two bikes cascaded together to create one bike amused me... especially when he hopped on it and started to ride it! :D

About a year ago, before I started this thread, I posted pictures on other forums of a really lousy building site using very dangerous techniques.
The stupidity you see in the following photos makes it pretty easy to see why the beam killed a man when it fell.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/aa.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/ab.jpg

Those working methods don't seem to have changed a lot.

Four dead this time because no one could be bothered to wire the place up properly.

PS - The badly installed beams were never fixed, just plastered over so they couldn't be seen.

Indonesians drive on the left....quite a lot of the time.
Seeing them drive on the right is so common, no one even cares.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/PICT0068.jpg

All vehicles have one thing in common; they need fuel.
Petrol stations aren't always handy so there are loads of roadside places selling it.
This is the first time I've seen it sold 'debunkus' (Wrapped for take away) in a plastic bag.
Safe as houses.....or maybe a burnt out shop.

mas fred love the pictures.
The toilet one is the same as in pakistan houses...boy was i in for a shock
will try to get pics of Edinburgh. But dont know how to upload it as i dont have the thinngy bit :unsure
In the first picture which one is you... I think no glasses.
As for the gun....me no like, but hubby has one.

the wall with the glass on top. I have seen some walls in Edinburgh where they still there.
hows the bridge dong, is it still standing.

I can't resist taking pictures of really silly things on the roads.

Medical care comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Midwives are available everywhere.
This is because they earn very little in their full time jobs so need to do a bit of moonlighting and because there's demand in a country where many can't afford proper medical care.
The midwives are properly trained and professional but there is little no no back up
if something goes wrong.

"Bidan" is the Indonesian word for midwife.

You've got to hand it to them for making such a vehicle. In the UK you would probably find engineering degree students who would come up with such ideas for their projects. I'm sure these guys built this with the their practical handy skills and most probably without any paperwork. Although the health and safety leaves a lot to be desired for, i'd take my hat off to them for their hard work and practical engineering skills :)

Nice pics - keep them coming in ;)

Riding a motorbike with one had is dangerous but common.
Sadly, hold a baby with the other is the same.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6020015.jpg

Pensions are something a lot of people don't have.
That means a lot of old people work until they drop.
These sights are pretty common in Indonesia.

I've been posting photos of a bridge that hasn't fallen down yet.
Today, I was feeling really indefatigable (Sorry George :D) so I pushed the metaphorical boat out and walked down the river.
I real boat would have been a far better idea as there was a very suspicious toilet style smell in there.
I washed my legs after that jaunt.

Anyway - The bridge from underneath.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6040015.jpg

I wandered off to a train station yesterday as I had to jaunt to Jakarta.
Train stations mean people and people drink water so that means waste plastic.

Plastic is cash if you recycle it for a living so that means collectors.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050007.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050004.jpg

People around means others will try to sell them whatever.
Traders are everywhere but they never pester you.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050008.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050009.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050010.jpg

A lot of people around also attracts beggars.
Most play music as these blind guys do.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050002.jpg

Some are obviously unable to work so people tend to give.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050012.jpg

They work the stations and the trains.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050020.jpg

I have no clue if they have to pay to ride the trains or are allowed on for free.

The trains always have buskers. Some are terrible as this guy was.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050022.jpg

Some are younger than you'd expect.
Yes; The lad at the bad has got a baby with him.
Fair chance they have an adult forcing them to do it.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050016.jpg

You can buy all sorts while on the train.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050017.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050019.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/P6050024.jpg

My camera was poorly.
The viewscreen had gained a load of bad pixels and it was getting worse by the day. I don't think it would have been a long time before it was a new screen or dustbin time.
I was offered a reasonable price for it so I snatched his hand off.
Of course that left me cameraless, a terrible situation to be in, so I popped to my favourite electronics shop that I happen to know had one or two cameras for sale.
I got a very nice nice on what I hope will be a reasonable fujifilm unit.
It's not quite as neat as the Olympus and it's a tad bigger but first tests suggest it's going to be fine.
I can see the 30X optical zoom with a max of 200X digital zoom proving quite handy for longer shots.

I have to learn how to drive it yet so as to get best results but have my first effort.
On the subject of driving - Run out of petrol? No problem; just get a mate to push you.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1026.jpg

I can't say exactly how old this kid is but he looks way too young to be working.
That's poverty in Indonesia.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1059.jpg

The bridge again.
The surface is breaking up badly now but that isn't stopping overloaded trucks using it.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1092.jpg

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1106.jpg

I'm assured it's due to be repaired next month.

However, they can always use smaller trucks but get the same stuff in them.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1110.jpg

Or there's always a motorbike.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1130.jpg

Some people are in a bit of a state and have nothing left but to beg on the street.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1153.jpg

Some people chose another way of life. Not in a dark alley if you please.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1152.jpg

Motorbikes are considered to be something you service when they break down.
Wrecks are common on Indonesia's roads.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1161.jpg

Indonesian law requires all riders to wear a helmet.

http://i456.photobucket.com/albums/qq281/fredyboys/DSCF1170.jpg
