Organize your move to Sri Lanka

Hi all,

we invite you to share your experience about moving to Sri Lanka.

Here is a list of questions which might help the ones preparing their move to Sri Lanka:

What would you bring and what would you leave behind?

Is it a good idea to bring furniture or domestic appliances?

Any foodstuffs that are banned in Sri Lanka?

Is it better to bring a car or to buy one once settled in Sri Lanka?

Any advice for the ones who are moving to Sri Lanka?

Thank you in advance for your participation :)

What would you bring and what would you leave behind?
Bring your phone and laptop (if needed). You can buy a new mobile telephone connection for 1$-1.3$.
Bring summer cloths, but it is cheaper here than your country I guess. :)
Please note: When visiting temples, you can not wear shoes, hats, shorts or cut sleeve shirts/blouses
bring your baby's milk formula

Is it a good idea to bring furniture or domestic appliances?
No need!! rented apartments are mostly furnished!!

Any foodstuffs that are banned in Sri Lanka?
Yes!! Genetically Modified foods!!!
Foods must be certified as GM-free before they will be allowed.
Soya beans and all products that contain its derivatives including soya milk, soy sauce and soya flour are banned
tomatoes and tomato based food products (ketchup, sauce, puree), corn (maize), corn flour (maize flour), cheese, potatoes and products containing potatoes, bakers and brewers yeast, beet sugar, microbiological starter cultures used in foods (like yoghurt cultures).

Is it better to bring a car or to buy one once settled in Sri Lanka?
Buying is cheaper than bringing one as the tax for custom is very high to bring it here.

Any advice for the ones who are moving to Sri Lanka?
Yes, you can trust people but not all. By speaking to them you can easily separate milk from water!!
Try to buy things from super markets with fixed prices.
