I read the string on unlocking the iPhone using an online site but my modem firmware is too advanced 05.14.02 plus I'm still stuck with AT&T's data plan rate which here in Hong Kong is ridiculously high. Any suggestions?

Go to the next electronic store and let them unlock it. If they can (don't want) not help you in HK, do a short trip to SZ on next weekend. Mainland Chinese are heros of unlocking.
For all who want to buy an iPhone in China. Buy an HK version, no need to unlock it. They are sim-lock free and everywhere available in China. Works best.
