Cards on the table lol

OK, I'm 48 years old, of very good health, I have a Supervisors NVQ2 qualification, I have a Forklift truck licence and my drivers licence allows me to drive a vehicle up to 7.5t.

I have 15 years experience of working with computers, both hardware and software and though I have no formal qualifications in this area  I consider myself very profficient.

If I were to sell my place in England and rent in Malta I have worked out I could be financially dependant on myself for 5 years.

Going off the above and the fact that I am prepared to do any job, realistically, what are my chances of securing work in Malta and what are the best steps to take in looking for work.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Pastizzi,

welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by being financially dependent on yourself ?

As to the job issues check out previous posts and links to job agencies,ETC and the Classifieds sections of newspapers.

I'm usually very frank and realistic about job issues so here is my opinion:

1)Being proficient in computer skills is basic knowledge at the moment and many Maltese kids are trained or being trained for IT jobs that might not exist.
Most IT companies are looking for experienced and highly qualified IT specialists, qualifications the Maltese cannot offer in many cases.

2)Fork lift and/or driving jobs are looked for but don't pay well ( the notorius Maltese salary). How about checking out the new Arriva bus company as they are desperatly looking for drivers but don't pay that well. The difficulty might be the Maltese language requirement. Many jobs require Maltese language skills(if only to keep foreigners out of the market).

The problem in Malta is not finding work but getting a decent salary. Many Maltese work at 2 or even 2 jobs to make ends meet. Malta has some of the lowest salaries in Europe, often near minumum wage.

I wish you luck with Malta and just one last question:
What makes you look at Malta for a future job?

Cheers
Ricky

Hi Ricky

By "financially dependent" I mean that I would have enough money in the bank to live on without working, obviously I would rather work straight away and not dip into my savings too much!

As for why I want to work in Malta, well my dream for a number of years has been to live in Malta, therefore working there is a natural progression until I can retire.

Circumstances dictate that within the next 12 months I will be in a position to sell my place in England and make that dream a reallity.

I have some Maltese friends in Mosta who I have visited many times in the past and each time I go the desire to stay grows.

My friends have stated they will help me in any way they can, but I hope I can make my own way in Malta as soon as possible.

Thanks for your advice Ricky.

Best wishes

Philip

Hi Pastizzi,

that sounds like a good reason and sensible planning!

With that background you can certainly give it a go. I hope you generate enough from your house sale to make things easier and that you find the right kind of work.

Maybe work on your language skills in the meantime and follow the situation on the island until then.

Cheers
Ricky

I think you have the right attitude to it so you will do well. Maybe look at setting up a small business repair pc/laptops installing software and aim at the expats. worth a go and you would not need qualifictions or be able to speak maltese. I have said this before I would rather work in a bar here than a bank in UK, jIM

Hi Jim,

now that's a really good business idea!

Repairing computers for expats and running a bar and serving cisk at the same time-))) Don't need Maltese language and just be able to serve a good pint!

Cheers
Ricky

Hi Jim

Sounds like a plan, and worth some research into setting up a business in Malta, thankyou. Is there a demand for such a business amongst expats?

I'd sweep the streets if it meant a job in Malta:D

Anyway, thanks for all the help, I now have something to go on.

Cheers

id say there was an opening for that sort of business - subject to plenty of research - many expats have pcs for communication with distant family...and european banking... and not being agist but many of them are over 50 and may not be too wise on the technology front. so go for it

There are however, PC repair shops on almost every other corner.  If you are good and can back it up perhaps.. but the competition is very high.

:)

I agree there.

As I said right at the beginning under point 1) there are many Maltese opening these kinds and other kinds of shops all the time. Someone whispers IT to someone in the governing party and that is the newest business model and the pack go for it. At the moment it is 'cloud computing'! Smart City seems to have stalled - just a new cafe and catering business opening there. If you look behind the colourful fences lining the approach you will see that it is all quite derelict and rather empty dry rocks.Maybe someone is mistaking 'cloud computing' with 'dream on'.

What is lacking in Malta is the really highly qualified, professional service in all areas offered at a reasonable price. Just being able to take a computer apart and install anti-virus programs and other software is what the Maltese shops offer plus overpriced eqipment and software.

Whatever business you have in mind in Malta do your market research and business planning first. There is no room for mistakes by foreigners.

Cheers

Learn how to use and teach, Facebook, Skpe, TV over IP, MSN, Email. as well as fixing computers you could teach how to used the programs Xpats use. I would prefer to have an Xpat come to my house to do a repair than one of those corner shops have my computer. I have a load of spares in UK enough to kit a shop, if you are into wi-fi I have a complete business sitting in UK doing nothing, I have kit that can send wi-fi 40 kilometers line of sight and enough wi-fi nodes to cover the whole of Malta. PM me if you want any more info. Jim

I could be the first customer! I need someone to do TV over IP for me, sort out anti virus etc and free up some memory, and not rip me off!

Please don't take this as a knock...

My business in the UK before my wife and myself came to Malta was to run a successful IT company reselling and repairing Computers and Laptops, we had staff out on Contract work and I myself was seconded to Fujitsu and Marks and Spencer IT.

Now there are engineers and engineers, the amount of work that we had was extremely good because we did the job at a decent price with Trained Staff.  We charged correspondingly for this.

The amount of people that I personally knew that had "Friends" that were IT gods and work with IBM / Microsoft / Apple etc.. that still ended up coming to us was huge.

Please if you do get involved in this, do some training, get knowledgable... i am not saying that you are not knowledgable and If you did this as a full time job in the UK then please ignore my remarks, but if you didn't and just fixed mates machines then heed the advice. There are to many "Kitchen" Engineers that think they know what they are doing... again not a knock at you...

I have a legitimate copy (and by that i mean the original disks) of every Windows Operating system and I am still part of Microsoft Partner programme to keep upto date with things... Spend some money and do things like this, It will be better for you and you will certainly get the respect of people and more work out of it. If you cut corners you will get noticed for the wrong reasons.

Good luck with your venture and should you need any assistance or would like to talk then pm me.

suggest you make contact with Lucyanya on here... sounds like her 'other half' is just what you need! He sorts all my IT problems out and boy! do I give him some...

I have to agree with everything that Scubaboy says.

My husband has been working in the IT industry since 1985 (yes, there were computers then) and has extensive experience with Unix, Linux, Microsoft, Cisco, Novell, AIX, Mikrotik and loads more.  He's a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.  Has worked with home users through to major well known company networks, so definitely not a 'kitchen engineer'.

He, like Scubaboy, is constantly bemoaning the backroom IT bandits for ripping people off and creating reputations that he has to then overcome.  He also lives off of his reputation.

Thanks Mikea for the recommendation.....  and yes...  you do set him some 'interesting' challenges.
