Destination Sunshine

Hi there,
i'm Sly from Cologne/Aachen, Germany, and 24 years old.
I am just finishing my master-thesis in computer science next month and i am considering moving to malta at the beginning of 2012 since my girlfriend is maltija living in malta, i love the sun and always had plans to move to the south.

Now i am thinking about how to manage it.
As a Graduate i don't have any job experience yet. Will it be difficult finding a job? And does anyone here knows an approximation for a starting salary (master in computer science)? In Germany i read it is about 36.000€ p/a, but i know that the salaries in malta are much below.
I am planning to visit my girlfriend in december for 2,5 weeks and i thought, before that i will send job applications, so i can visit job-interviews in december with the aim starting in the mid of january or beginning of february. When should i begin sending applications? how spontaneous are the maltese employer?

My last question for the moment: i was planning to spend around 400€ monthly for accomodation (sharing it with girlfriend=200€?) and utilities around 100€ monthly for me (so 200€ for two people?). is this, especially the utilities, realistic?

Thats it. Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the answers.

Ciao,
Sly.

Hi Sly,

welcome to the forum and Willkommen . I look forward to meeting someone from Koeln. We have a nice Expat group with several German members here in Sliema.

Your figures for the costs of living are about right but forget the salary as a beginner in IT unless you have very specific qualifications.

You will be lucky to get anywhere near 20.000 €/year as a beginner. Many Maltese have been trained in IT but there are not that many jobs going so expect competition.

If you are not available to start a job right off you should not send out applications so far in advance.

I wish you luck for your future in Malta.
Ricky

400 euros a month for accomm is reasonable and 200 euros a month for utils is more than enough.

as ricky said forget the salary - he is spot on.

good luck and enjoy malta

Sly, certainly take heed of the previous comments but from personal experience in running specialised IT / Comms service operations here in Malta, there are certain areas of skill shortages that need to be addressed over the coming months / years if Malta is to continue its technological / commercial development.

Try researching these elements and focus the next few months (pre travel) upon knowledge growth in these areas to at least give you an edge.

From our perspective, we develop Video deployment / broadcast solutions upon a global basis and indeed will be undertaking a month long volume trial of our IPTV / Virtual cable system, (starting next month...yelp...a few days away!) to willing testers accross the 4 corners of the globe! Following this trial we will move into full deployment subject obviously to success and finding the right additional people!

However, we struggle to find individuals with the right skill sets that meet our needs here in Malta!...

So please, feel free to send your data to us and provided your core and aptitude are a match then we would be happy to meet with you when you come over later in the year.

Regardless, I wish you the very best of luck.

Mike.

Hi Mike,

thanks for you detailed input.

Apart from your specific problem recruiting someone with the right skills for your IPTV business, which IT / computer science areas do you think will be up and coming in Malta in the future and interesting for a young college graduate/degree holder?

I know from people working in IT that IT jobs are already being outsourced to countries like India or the Phillipines because they are 'cheaper' than Malta. So where will the skill shortages in Malta be in the future?

Where would someone like Sly have an advantage over the IT students generated here in Malta ( MCAST und University)?

Sly, you should try Konnekt and Castille Resources to start as they list quite a range of IT jobs with good job descriptions and required qualifications, experience and skills. You can register and apply online.

Cheers
Ricky

hi there,
at first thank to you three for the warm welcome and also for the informations.

I was aware that the 36000 wouldn't be reached even close, i thought, before posting, at 25000 or something like this, so thank you, Ricky, for the correction (and also for the other informations).

I am also interessted waiting for answers on your questions, especially

Where would someone like Sly have an advantage over the IT students generated here in Malta ( MCAST und University)?

In Germany, my university has a very good reputation and is known to impart a strong theoretical knowledge, but i think this woun't be an advantage regarding Malta.

@mikea: thank you. i will send you a PM.
