Formalities to bring your pet in Switzerland

Hi all,

What are the formalities and paperwork required to bring your pet in Switzerland?

How long do formalities & paperwork usually take in Switzerland?

What are the relevant authorities to contact?

Which vaccines are compulsory? Do your pets have to go in quarantine at their arrival in Switzerland?

Which advice would you give to the ones who would like to move with a dog, a cat or any other pet?

Thanks in advance for participating :)

The first thing to do is to check out the website of the Swiss customs (Schweizer Zoll) at www.ezv.admin.ch
The second thing to do is to consult your vet. He or she should be perfectly able to tell you what conditions apply and which vaccinations your pet should have.

A practical thing (own experience): if you are bringing your pet to Switzerland because you are immigrating into Switzerland, you have to declare your pet just as you have to declare your goods like furniture. Take in mind that this is only possible on working days. Even the biggest border crossings are *closed* for such things during the weekend...

Hope this helps,
Twan.

Hi Twan!

Thanks for your contribution ;)

Hi Julien,

Just fell onto your question. Hope my reply is not too late and I can still be able to help you.

The requirements to bring your dog into Switzerland depends on the country you are travelling from. The importation is basically devided into three different origins - arrivals from the EU, arrivals from countries where rabies is absent or well controlled or from countries with urban rabies.

You can find out a whole lot on the official website from the veterinary office in Bern: bvet.admin.ch

After your arrival in Switzerland you will have register your dog. More information to be found on our blog:

Hope this information is useful to you and let us know if you have any questions.
