Accommodation in Utrecht

Finding accommodation in Utrecht may not be an easy task. However, you will find some useful tips in this article.

Utrecht, one of the major Dutch cities, is very popular with expatriates, especially students due to the presence of the University of Utrecht, as well as many other higher education institutes. Hence, you are more likely to find student housing there. Room and flat sharing are also quite widespread in the city.

Moreover, since a few years, 20 m2 containers have been converted into affordable student housing options. Hence, students may find accommodation rather easily. But professionals can still find other types of housing units such as apartments and houses in some neighborhoods. However, rent prices can be quite high.

Rents prices

In general, rent prices in Utrecht range between 800 and 1,200 euros monthly for a two bedroom apartment of around 50 m2. However, prices vary according to the neighborhood and on the comfort level. These tend to be higher in the city center which consists of many posh neighborhoods.

Utrecht is known for being a dynamic city thanks to the presence of young students. However, it is also very popular for its cultural side, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. You are likely to enjoy its water channels, as well as the famous Dom Toren cathedral, museums which are found downtown, etc. Moreover, a new neighborhood is currently being built in Western Utrecht. It should host some 80,000 more inhabitants in the coming years with modern housing units.

Find accommodation

Unlike other Dutch cities, it can be quite difficult for foreigners to find accommodation in Utrecht. Hence, you are advised to start networking well before moving to the Netherlands. In fact, Internet should be your greatest tool during your accommodation search. You can as well check out housing offers on specialized websites and in classified ads in online local newspapers. Students may also find student accommodation more easily.
