Finding work in Amsterdam

Recommend

Amsterdam has always been a city on edge; in the seventeenth century it was the major trading hub for all of Europe, essentially, and it has continued to maintain its position as an economic powerhouse, even during and after the global recession in 2008-2009. Nowadays, expats trying to find a job in the Netherlands will find a wide choice of international and local companies based in the city.

Strongest sectors

Amsterdam is home to more than 2500 international businesses that employ almost 130,000 people in the city. These international businesses headquartered there include well-known corporations such as Tesla, Uber, and Netflix, but the city is also uniquely friendly towards start-ups and entrepreneurs. Amsterdam’s strongest points are developing mobile applications, the sharing economy, and other internet applications.

Amsterdam has a sizeable population of people in their 20s and 30s, which makes it a fertile testing ground for Internet-based companies. People in their 20s and 30s have grown up with the Internet and are much more likely to partake in the sharing economy.

There is also a strong service sector, as Amsterdam attracts almost 14 million tourists every year. Sales and marketing companies also have a strong presence in the city, while software development, financial services, and software-as-a-service providers are on an upwards trend.

Finding work in Amsterdam

It is not too difficult to find a company that is hiring in Amsterdam; most of the companies that are hiring in the Netherlands are based in Amsterdam or the surrounding area. Jobs, on average, pay well, but working in Amsterdam almost certainly requires that you live in the city, or nearby – no more than half an hour away – and that means higher rents.

Being fluent in Dutch, English, and at least one other language is a major asset when it comes to finding work in the Netherlands in general, and Amsterdam in particular. Fluency is Dutch may not be formally required, but it is certainly one of the things that make you more appealing to hire.
