Phones and Internet in Malta


Need a land line or a mobile phone in Malta? How to get connected to the Internet? Find out in this article.

Despite being the world's smallest smallest archipelago, Malta hosts a very developed telecommunications network. So if you are relocating there, you shall have no trouble in obtaining a land line, a mobile phone and Internet connection. Indeed, Malta has an optical fiber network, like many European countries. Moreover, rates are rather very affordable when it comes to international phone calls. But before proceeding, make sure to choose the best offer according to your needs and budget and to inquire on related formalities.

Service providers

Malta hosts the following main phone and Internet service providers:

Land lines: GO, Melita

Mobile phones: Vodafone Malta, GO Mobile, Melita Mobile

Internet: GO, Melita.

Land line

If you wish to obtain a land line, regardless of the service provider you have chosen, you just have to visit the nearest branch with the following documents:

  • your resident permit
  • the owner's authorization if you are renting accommodation
  • a duly filled and signed application form on the spot.

Your land line should be set up within a few days. Moreover, administrative fees of around 20 euros apply with Melita and around 60 euros with GO. Remember that the phone location will be mentioned on the phone bill. The service provider will definitely give you more details in this regard.

You can settle your phone bill at the end of the month with regard to your consumption, either by direct debit, or by bank transfer, or even in cash at the counter. Otherwise, you can purchase prepaid cards according to the length of time you spend on the phone. These will even allow you make phone calls from your land line to those of other service providers.

Mobile phones

You can choose between a prepaid and post paid mobile line. In case you prefer a prepaid package, you can purchase your sim card in approved shops. Note that you will probably have to produce your identity card. Thereafter, you can recharge your account anytime thanks to prepaid scratch cards. As regards SMS, local ones will cost 2 cents while international ones will cost 6 cents. Finally, local phone calls will cost 9 cents per minute while international phone calls cost around 13 cents.

If you prefer otherwise, feel free to subscribe for a post paid contract with your favorite service provider. You can simply visit its nearest branch or an approved shop to fill an application form. The following documents are to be produced:

  • your resident permit
  • proof of address
  • a recent bank statement or a payment card.

Main Internet service providers also offer a wide range of packages at different interesting rates. To subscribe for an Internet connection, visit the nearest branch of your service provider with the following documents:

  • your resident permit
  • the owner's authorization if you are renting accommodation
  • a duly filled and signed application form.

Your Internet connection should be set up within a few days.
