Living in or near Luxembourg for expats

Many expats ask the question how to get a cheap apartment in Luxembourg because not everyone enjoys the advantage of an accommodation provided by the employer. As anyone who has ever lived in Luxembourg knows – it can be very expensive to live there. Beyond, most foreigners will be there only for a limited time, so that even a large apartment furnishing is usually not worthwhile.

What can expats do? Basically, there is an opportunity to avoid high costs in Luxembourg by renting an apartment in surrounding cities in Germany. Many people live in Trier and work in Luxembourg. These people enjoy lower rents in Germany. You can easily save a few hundred Euros. The only disadvantage is that it takes at least 45 minutes by car every morning to go to the office.

Unfortunately, there is also another problem for me as for many other expats. I will be only for six months in Luxembourg and then return back to Berlin. This clearly raises the question of home furnishings. Furnished apartments are also relatively expensive, so I had decided on a unfurnished flat. But living in an empty apartment is not really satisfactory. One needs at least the basic equipment: bed, wardrobe, desk and a window sun protection (e.g. a Plissee - I have bought one this summer in Luxemburg) and also a number of small items for daily needs. IKEA, of course, gives me and others the opportunity to keep costs low.

Nevertheless - enjoy Luxembourg - its a great city.
