Find out more about income tax and the taxation system in Japan.

The tax system in Japan

Those who are required to pay taxes in Japan fall into three categories: non-residents, non-permanent residents, and permanent residents. Non-residents who have been working or living in Japan for less than a year must only pay income tax and consumption tax. Non-permanent residents (residents who have been living or working in Japan for less than five years) must pay income tax, residence tax, and consumption tax. Permanent residents must pay all of the above, and sometimes more.
