Originally founded in 1983 as a choir of 100 of the best singers in the nation, the National Youth Choir has developed into the flagship ensemble of an internationally-recognised youth music organization which encompasses more than 750 singers, inspires and develops members and audiences with a year-round schedule of courses, workshops and performances, and makes an enduring contribution to the cultural life of the UK.
The National Youth Choir’s core activity remains its ten-day residential courses, held twice annually at locations around the UK. These courses deliver the fullest expression of the NYCGB’s commitment to excellence in vocal and musicianship training, with an intensive and challenging daily routine of warm-ups, sectional and full rehearsals, individual singing lessons and Alexander Technique sessions, masterclasses and workshops. Senior members of the choir work as section leaders, taking responsibility for the training and development of their peers.
The National Youth Choir’s concert schedule is designed to provide performance experience at the highest level. In the last five years, the National Youth Choir has appeared at the BBC Proms with Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, and in the Royal Festival Hall with Marin Alsop, drawing accolades from critics and audiences alike. International tours every four years provide members with unforgettable experiences and promote the NYCGB as a national cultural export. Concerts routinely feature new commissions by leading composers while regular recording projects contribute to a permanent artistic legacy.
For many young people in the UK, membership of the National Youth Choir facilitates the start of a life in music, both professionally and on an amateur basis. National Youth Choir singers proceed to undergraduate and postgraduate vocal study, university choral scholarships, and onwards to professional musical careers in all genres. NYCGB alumni include Royal Opera House and English National Opera company principals, members of The Sixteen, The Monteverdi Choir, The King’s Singers, The Swingle Singers, The Choirboys, G4, Blake, and Gareth Malone’s Voices, and conductors of choral societies, ensembles and consorts throughout the UK. Those who choose not to pursue music as a career often maintain a lifelong involvement in the UK’s vibrant and diverse choral culture, creating and participating in choirs and festivals, working as ambassadors for singing and musical activity, and transmitting the joy of singing to the next generation.
