Maple and Marula

Ive been many things. A university English instructor, a picker upper of dead bodies, a musician, and a sales guy. My work brought me and my family from Vancouver, Canada to Pretoria, South Africa in September 2016, and Im still wondering how that happened. I started this blog mostly because my friends back in Canada kept asking me how things were in South Africa, and posting about my experiences seemed more efficient than repeating myself hundreds of times. Maple and Marula is a way for me to make sense of my new surroundings as an expat who has no idea what Im doing.

My Thoughts From The Deep End

This blog tells the story of some big life changes. First, my husband and I just moved to South Africa for three years. We moved due to an exciting opportunity my husband had with his job. Second, I won't be working anymore. I'm actually not allowed to work so that will be different given that for the past twenty years I've been somewhat of a workaholic. I'm excited to share our adventures with you!

UnderAnAfricanSun

I?m Kelly and I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa at the end of October 2013 with my life partner Yannick. I am American however before moving to South Africa I had been living and working in France (Paris and Nice) since the year 2000. Yannick (he?s French) had been traveling to Cape Town for his job since 2010 and consequently we had been able to take several holidays to South Africa and soon discovered this was a place we would like to call home someday. When I was offered a job for the company I had been consulting for back in Nice to move to Joburg (we had never even visited the city before) we jumped on the opportunity and haven?t looked back since. I started this blog to share our adventures as we discover our new city, country and continent. Our passions include travel (especially camping and 4x4ing), photography, the great outdoors for activities such as safari and hiking as well as partaking in devouring good food (I?m a vegetarian and Yannick is very much a carnivore) and wine. We are living our new life to the max here in South Africa and I hope you enjoy a peek into the place we now call home.

A Home Away From Home

I'm a 24 year-old grad student born and raised in sunny southern California, but currently living in Johannesburg, South Africa. As you may imagine, I have a passion for travel, culture, food and all things international. As an undergrad I majored in International Studies at CLU and during this time I was lucky enough to study abroad for not one, not two, but THREE semesters (one of the perks of the major). During my Sophomore year I spent a Semester at Sea and then went on to spend two semesters in Stellenbosch, South Africa during my Junior and Senior years. As life would have it, while studying in the Rainbow Nation I fell in love with a "local" and I'm sure anyone who doesn't already know the story can very well predict what happens next... In January 2010 I decided to take the plunge and re-locate to Johannesburg to not only be closer to the boy, but also to continue my studies (here) and conquer my (almost) life-long dream of living overseas. So far it's been nothing short of an adventure with plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way. My blog is not only an outlet for me to keep friends and family updated, but also a way for me to document my not so ordinary life as it happens and provide others with a somewhat informative and often times humorous account of what life is like being a foreigner in a place so far away from home.
