BoracayCompass - The Ultimate Guide

Hi I'm Paul, an expat living in Boracay Island in the Philippines. I started BoracayCompass in 2013 to help expats and travelers alike make the most of their stay on the island. Since then the site has grown a lot, not just in traffic but also in engagement: I get lots of emails and comments from happy and thankful visitors, which motivates me to keep on building out the website even further to truly make it the ultimate guide. I do this through writing very detailed in-depth guides about all things Boracay, such as what the fun things to do are, the cost of living, where to stay, how to get there etc. Basically, everything you need to know about the island. In the future I also plan to 1. set up a local community section and 2. write in-depth articles to promote environmental sustainability on the island, because I love Boracay but the trajectory of current development isn't sustainable, so we need to start taking matters into our own hands and correct the current development trajectory towards a more sustainable one.

Shifting Centres: New Delhi to New York

On this blog, I honestly document my experiences as an Indian girl hustling in New York. The idea is to tell you what to expect in everyday life. Some days you'll smile at little things, but others are full of rude shocks. I share how to make the move, what to expect, how to survive and thrive. If you want to know what its like to move here then this is for you. I hope you read through, enjoy and find something to take from my experiences as Im Shifting Centres; from New Delhi to New York.

Start Going Places

Start is me, Joe Start. I'm a long-time expat from California living in the Yvelines, suburbs west of Paris. I write non-fiction about my adventures as an American expat abroad, first-person travel memoirs, cross-cultural observations, the impact of technological innovation on individuals, the history of food, the crossroads of ingredients recipes and culture, and recreational sailing in habitable monohulls, smaller catamarans and dinghies.  I like the word dinghy.  I think I'll write it a third time.  Dinghy. My latest long-form project is the book French License, released this Summer.

Sage & Simple

Once upon a time, I had the chance to move to the happiest country in the world! My restless Aries spirit liked that idea, so I did what any girl in my position would do I grabbed my cat, booked a one-way ticket to Denmark, and became an expat! Then I met an Englishman, fell in love, eloped, and moved to the happiest city in the world.

Maple and Marula

Ive been many things. A university English instructor, a picker upper of dead bodies, a musician, and a sales guy. My work brought me and my family from Vancouver, Canada to Pretoria, South Africa in September 2016, and Im still wondering how that happened. I started this blog mostly because my friends back in Canada kept asking me how things were in South Africa, and posting about my experiences seemed more efficient than repeating myself hundreds of times. Maple and Marula is a way for me to make sense of my new surroundings as an expat who has no idea what Im doing.
