Greetings expats.
My name is Natalia and I am a Portuguese expat living in the US. I am married to an American and have two children. I work at Lebanon Valley College (LVC), PA, and am also a student at LVC.
Inspired by my husbands experience when we lived in Portugal, I am doing a research project on the experiences of American expats living in Puerto Rico (this semester). I was surprised to find out that apart for a few published biographies, there is not a lot of research done on that subject, especially because there is endless research on the Puerto Rican diaspora living in the continent. I know, however, that there are aprox. 20,000 of you on the island.
I am asking for your help. I created a simple survey of 18 questions that will take less than 5 minutes to complete. I titled the survey Puerto Rican Gringos and please note that I use the word Gringos in a very endearing way. Since my research is about American expats in Puerto Rico, I ask that you do not complete the survey if you are not an American expat.
The survey has been reviewed and approved by LVCs Institutional Review Board. I am obligated by law to make the following disclosure, regarding your rights and responsibilities as test subjects, which serves as your consent since I am administering the survey online:
1- The survey you are about to complete will be used only for a classroom research project that aims to compare and contrast the lives of Puerto Ricans living in the continental United States with the lives of American expats living in Puerto Rico. Most questions are multiple choice; however, some are open-ended and you will be asked to give your opinion and share your experience.
2- Your participation in this anonymous survey will not put you into any physical or psychological danger.
3- The survey will require approximately 5 minutes to complete. All data obtained from your responses will remain anonymous and confidential, and will be used solely for my classroom research project; your responses will not reflect back to you in any way.
4- The survey is designed to allow you to skip any question you do not wish to respond.
5- You are free to withdraw from the present study at any time, by simply choosing to not complete the survey.
6- Statement of Informed Consent: I have read the above statements, understand my rights and responsibilities as a participant in this project, and give the experimenters my informed consent to voluntarily participate in this research.
Take the survey:

I would like to thank all of you in advance for taking the survey. Even though I will never know who helped me, please know that I am extremely grateful. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions ( Also, if you have any other ideas of how I might collect data for my research, feel free to share it.
