We're shutting down our lives in the USA and heading for Belize by March 2014. Here's what we're learning along the way.

We are coming to Belize to check and see if we want to retire there. I'm having a problem getting our dog into Belize. He is a large dog and the airlines won't take him because of his breed. Can you suggest any other way. I've thought about a boat transport or driving, but my husband doesn't want to drive through Mexico. Any ideas? Also, what are the chances of the dog getting mange?

My boyfriend and I are coming to Ambergris Caye for a holiday Oct 16-23 and while we're there, really would love to hang out with some american ex pats to learn about the pros and cons of retirement there. Is there a place that ex pats hang out or a way to engage in conversation with some of you?

How do you find a decent realtor? Do you have names of recommended realtors? What about banks? Where are the best places to live? We hear that Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are "in" and Placencia is growing, but where is the real Belize? Where should one look? What should one pay?

Poppylon, right you are. It has been one year and I have been struggling with an extremely long blog post on what the year has taught me. Truth is, I feel I know less now than when we moved here. I still love it and have no regrets about moving! I will wrestle it to the ground and publish soon! Corozal is a good example. We briefly visited Corozal before officially moving to Belize. What we saw was just a sliver of the community, from which we drew all sorts of erroneous conclusions. Recently we flew into Corozal and took a taxi across the border. There is so much more there than I imagined. So, the answer is, no, I do not know Corozal but there are ex-pat forums in every town in Belize. They hold better answers than I could give!

Robert, my husband and I are considering taking a trip to Belize to look at property. We live on 14 acres in Idaho and are 58 and 56. Does Belize still have the retirement program? What part of Belize should we look in for a small farm and where should we stay? We've thought about this for about 4 years and are now getting serious. It looks like most farms are near the Hummingbird highway? Also, do you have a good recommendation for a realtor? Thanks for any and all info you can help with!

Hi, Sounds like you are making some exciting plans. Most of the country's farmland is north (Orange Walk/Corozal) and west (San Ignacio) of Belmopan, the capital city. Frankly I have limited knowledge of this part of the country, though we have visited both. That said, Rainforest Realty in San Ignacio is probably a great place to start. They are terrific people and know the countryside well. They also cover the whole country so could give you a better picture of what is available, depending on the kind of farming you plan to do. Land is still quite affordable in Western Belize! Good luck and let me know what you come up with!
